60% keyboards?
« on: Sun, 23 March 2014, 16:52:43 »
Are there any 60% keyboards that are considered high quality.

I would want one that has the exact layout of a normal keyboard.

Is key spacing or size any different?  what exactly does "mini" suggest or is it basically anything smaller than tkl?

the poker 2 is the only one which has the same layout as a TKL.  all the other 60% boards make compromises and result in non-standard sizes, usually to fit in the arrow keys.

the picture you posted is a pure.  the right shift is non-standard to fit in the extra key.

Most customs allow for standard 60% placement
main kbs:  87UB (55g)  Custom Filco TKL (62g clears)

WTS JD40, Custom Ergoclear Filco

WTB ROHS Red BBv2 (Topre), OG EK Tri-Color Skull (TOPRE)

Thanks guys.  the poker 2 looks nice.  Ive heard a lot of talk about "korean" custom keyboards, but i cant seem to find much on any kind of custom keyboards. if anyone can link me to a couple of these places id appreciate it.

Check out sprits groupbuy in the groupbuy subforum. He also has a 60% keyboard and can assemble it for you.

if you want build quality just get a HHKB and learn the barely-different layout. most people really enjoy it once they get over the minuscule changes in habit.

I actually didn't like the HHKB for coding... the arrow key layer is just painful to use for long sessions. Other than that, I loved the HHKB Pro 2. And if I didn't use arrow keys so much, I wouldn't have sold it :(.

Have a leopold FC660C... which I might get a realforce tkl sometime soon. Topre is nice.

That's why I'm interested in the space-fn keyboard layout. I like the idea of chording the space bar instead of the out-of-the-way fn-key. Alternately, there's a way of re-mapping win and fn to swap places, then swap caps lock and win key on the left to get a more convenient fn-key. I've yet to achieve this however.

I like the 60% format ok enough for programming, mainly because I use IntelliJ and RubyMine most of the time, which have some pretty crazy useful keyboard shortcuts.

Maybe keep an eye out for the CM Novatouch - a TKL keyboard with Topre switches and Cherry MX compatible stems.

Probably coming out later this year.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Had some friends try those out at SXSW this year. They're both on board to buy them as soon as they drop, and have been hyping me up for them since they used them. I will officially own more keyboards than computers after I buy one when they drop.

i would recommend the pure pro, but i presume that's not the layout you want.
i own a pure pro with pbt keycaps myself. this plate-mounted beauty just feels incredible :)

again; i presume you're looking for a different layout, but i'd certainly vouch for the pure pro (pbts! ;p) when it comes to quality.

have fun finding your keyboard! :)

Nice info!  Although i made a post about 60%,  tkl may be good enough, im just waiting for mine to arrive (and i wanted more info on 60% anyway).

Ducky DK9087G2 TKL (Black Chery)  will be my first mechanical.

I've been using an orbweaver to the left of my lyocosa and i think it would be a better setup with a smaller keyboard.

I specifically like the design of the novatouch with the front print and backliting. thats something i haven't seen before.

also if  i think about it i would just want the spacing of alphanumeric and left modifiers to be the same and i think id be fine.
