Filco height replacement keycaps
« on: Mon, 07 April 2014, 17:08:24 »
Hi guys,
New member and first time mech kb owner...
I just purchased a used Filco Ninja Majestouch TKL keyboard for gaming. Really happy with it so far but would like to replace a missing fn key-cap (R1 1x1.25) and considering a tactile key-cap for W (WASD).  It has the cherry mx brown switches.  I love how they operate.

I looked at WASD Keyboards but I have read that they are slightly taller than the stock Filco key-caps.  Also, they offer several textured keys, does anyone have a recommendation as to which of those is the least "fatiguing", as in smoothest but still easy to locate?

Where can I get a FN key and WASD keys that are the same height as the Filco?  Do any sites sell front facing lettering like the oem keys?

Thanks!

Well I ordered from WASD anyway, I read that the height difference was due to not seating them fully.  I am looking forward to getting these keys :)

Welcome to Geekhack!

A good start - answering your own question ;)

Filco keys are (usually) OEM profile, WASD are also OEM profile AFAIK, so they should be a fairly close match.

You'll probably end up replacing the whole keycap set eventually anyway.  Pretty much everyone does at some stage :))
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Very nice!  The WASD keycaps are identical to the Filco in texture, height, shape.  I ordered engraved red key caps and a blank key cap for the missing menu fn key.  They might be just slightly rougher, which is nice to differentiate the WASD movement keys from the surrounding.
