A "not great find" Cherry dyesub board to avoid....
« on: Mon, 04 February 2013, 22:21:44 »

Another "not great find" that I'm posting just so this shows up in searches and helps someone out in the future
http://www.ebay.com/itm/AT-T-Vintage-Keyboard-Modell-RS3000-3099-K440-V004-WS-Keybd-/251224517335?pt=US_Vintage_Computing_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a7e25ead7&autorefresh=true

Originally this ad only had the single picture of the keyboard top and not the correct model information (cherry 3000). So just from that picture you'd think you won the lottery and got a 3000S* dyesub cherry board for $50 bucks.

It seemed too good to be true, so I asked the seller to update the ad with a picture of the back label, which he did and then fixed the model numbers as well

So while it is dye sub, its a G83 and completely worthless to someone looking for a MX keycaps.

Additional pictures of the G83 keycaps flipped are here:
http://www2s.biglobe.ne.jp/~duelist/3099_K440/index.htm

And there was one reference to it here on GH inside another thread and not completely clear if they were talking about this board or something else

I saw some of this in Ebay but never bought them because they're indeed ruberdomes as they're not G80 or G81 but G83.

Thanks for this info guys! I am scouring the net for a capset for my QFR. Is this the keyboard we would look for ? It's listed as a G81.. http://www.ebay.com/itm/CHERRY-G81-3000LPNUS-PS2-Keyboard-/230606230363?pt=PCA_Mice_Trackballs&hash=item35b133d35b

I am still learning, so any info on why i'm incorrect would be great.

There are 5 details you should know about the keyboard you linked to.You said you were new, and I had a borning conference call, so you get a longer answer  :D
1.) The "G81" part of the model name means that it has MY switches. MY switches have the same stem size as MX switches, but are completely different otherwise and not preferred by most people
2.) The "L" part of the model name means that it has Lasered keycaps. Not doubleshot ("H") or dye sub (S). Cherry lasered caps are still much nicer than the pad printed ones that came with your QFR
3.) The combination of "G81" + "L" in a model name almost always means that the bottom row modifiers (Ctrl/Alt/Win/meta) have off-center stems. Your QFR has center-stems so these would not fit without cutting all the stems out and centering them
4.) Any cherry stepped Caps Lock will have an off-center stem which won't fit your QFR without being modified
5.) ALL cherry spacebars have an off-center center stem which won't fit your QFR either without being modified

If you want to learn more about cherry model naming conventions, take a look at http://deskthority.net/wiki/Cherry_article_numbers

Rabble rabble rabble! this is not a great find! Oh...

It's funny that people complain about that and don't take the time to read and see that it is great in one way, and not always meant to be great on your wallet.

Thanks for the post, flynn. Top notch, being par for you.

That keyboard looks hideous !
Wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole until it had spent a night in hydrogen-peroxide !

True, they are not MX-compatible, but : They ARE very nice thick dye-sublimated keycaps !!
(Yes, I actually have a similar board !)
One has to wonder how it is that you can get them on a el-cheapo crab-dome board like this,
but they cost a gazillion on a real keyboard ...

Back when Cherry was having dyesubs mass produced in the tens of thousands, they were not so expensive in huge volume. That is no longer done. So now we have low volume botique keycap, and we get the price to go with it.

Here are a couple more cherry/ebay tips to help you in your search

Here is a pretty cheap G81-8000HPCUS-2. The bad of this keyboard is that its a G81, so all the mod keys will be off-center pad printed and worthless to you. The good of it is that everything else (except the usual stepped Caps Lock & space bar) will fit on any normal ANSI-US keyboard and have correct profile keys.

Here is an ok priced G80-8113HRBUS-2. The bad of this keyboard is it has the ISO enter and 1x sized "|\" key which you'd need to acquire elsewhere to use this on a normal ANSI-US keyboard. The good of it is that because its a G80, all the mod keys are centered and so is the full-touch Caps Lock and they will fit a normal ANSI-US keyboard. Spacebar is of course standard off-center Cherry.

Just buy both, 100% compatible full doubleshot set done. Both are pretty good price too, and still not terrible end price for a full set if buy both... especially not if you combine all the leftovers and resell it.

I'd be interested in some relegendables and the Cherry off centered stem 6.25 space bar if you are considering buying both and selling left over keycaps ;D

Shoutouts to lysol and Flynn being awesome and spreading the Cherry knowledge! Keep up the good work mah dudes!

I got plenty of relegendable caps left over, so PM me if you want them.

thanks for the shoutouts. Most of what I've learned is from Lysol & Ascaii, so they get shoutouts from me too :)
