Will getting a mech improve my WPM?
« on: Sun, 07 September 2014, 19:48:52 »
I know that my WPM is quite a bit lower when I use my laptop than my regular desktop keyboard. Will getting a good keyboard improve my actual typing, or just the experience of it?

I heard you need to spend $400+ in order to break the 200 WPM barrier.

The more you spend on a keyboard, the higher your WPM. Some purchases give step change improvements while some are marginal. Korean kustoms and clacks will give you at least 20+ WPM more per each. That's why sifo is fastest. He has a GON, an LZ-GH, and a few clacks and brobots. Plus he's Korean himself, which helps a lot.

Hope that helps.

I read you had to have high WPM to even qualify to use a mech.

So, a mechanical keyboard is good for nothing except looking cool and annoying people around you... Sounds like a good investment

low key profile and how quickly the key springs back are two major things to consider when looking for speed. but we're talking very little improvement. my typing speed has increased 15% since i started using mechs (coming from buckling springs). but i can also type way faster on my apple wireless bluetooth keyboard (for the reasons mentioned in the first sentence).

You need to fully deck your keyboard in artisan keycaps in order to type faster.

The is the only scenario where a low WPM is encouraged. In fact, if your WPM gets higher the 0.005, you need to slow down.

Of course it will.

Just as getting a new set of golf clubs will improve your game.
Citizens United violates the essence of what made America a great country in its political system. Now it’s just an oligarchy, with unlimited political bribery being the essence of getting the nominations for president or to elect the president.
So now we’ve just seen a complete subversion of our political system as a payoff to major contributors, who want and expect and sometimes get favors for themselves after the election’s over.”

Normally:
WPM = ((amount spend on keyboard)/2) + 20

For Topre:
WPM = (((amount spend on keyboard)/2) + 20)*1.1

There is a lot of research on the ergodox. But early estimations indicate that when used over a long time, actual WPM could be over 9000. But you have to take that with a grain of salt as it is mostly based on anecdotal evidence from ergodox owners.

You missed one of the most important calculations to get WPM.

Once you have your base WPM from the equations above, you must then add the result from the Clackdratic equation: y = ax^2 + bx + c

a represents the total number of artisan caps (inclusive of Bro Caps and Clacks)
b represents the total number of Bro Caps
c represents the total number of Clacks
x represents the amount of money you have spent on your artisan caps
y represents your WPM

You can see from this calculation that as you accumulate more artisan caps, your WPM increases exponentially.
This is extremely dangerous because once you reach even 5 artisan caps, your WPM gets so high that you must deliberately type slower to avoid melting your caps (even your artisans) from the sheer heat generated by your typing.
