Cherry thick PBT dye-subed worth? vs ABS DS
« on: Sun, 23 November 2014, 04:25:01 »
Hi guys,

how much are original Cherry thick PBT dye-subed keycaps worth, and how do they compare to original Cherry ABS Double-Shots?

I'm assuming the price-difference is huge, but are the thick PBT dye-subed keycaps worth the extra money?

Best regards
Geroximo

Depends how much you care about how quickly ABS wears smooth. In terms of typing feel and quality I'd say they're similar.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

Y e s.

Cherry's PBT is a bit smoother than their ABS, but not by a lot. Between NIB dyesubs and NIB doubleshots there's not a big difference, but obviously the PBT set will hold up much better in the long run because of the material is way more durable.

From my experience, the going rate for ANSI Cherry dyesubs seems to be $300 for mint and $400 for NIB. For ISO  around $60-100 for mint, not sure about NIB.

Being in Germany, you have a good advantage as finding old Cherry G80/G81-30**SAD boards is often not a problem on German ebay. For example... starting at 1EUR!

My overwhelming preference is PBT because of the dry and slightly textured feel. I also like the crispness and longevity of the legends on good-quality dye-sublimated PBT keycaps, such as those on vintage IBM keyboards and current HHKB Pro 2 and Topre Realforce keyboards. Depending on the manufacturer, some of the dye-sub PBT keycap sets can be excellent as well.

Double-shot ABS keycaps also can have beautiful long-lasting legends, but ABS plastic tends to have a clammy feel that I do not like.

Yes that's right, I'm just wondering if I should look for a G80/81 SAD (PBT dye-sub) or a G80/81 HAD (DS ABS)

It's likey you can find either of them for quite cheap. Get both and decide what you like on your own. If it was me, I would try to get at least one of G80 model, so you have a decent board with MX to use with the preferred keycap set.

I prefer DS ABS massively. It's just so much better...

Cherry thick PBT is nothing like IBM, RF or HHKB in terms of feel, btw. Sandpaper vs Smoothness.

BSP is buttery and Cherry is velvety

Those are the adjectives I use for them, anyway. I usually don't like PBT, but I do like BSP and Cherry.
