Get an older Model M 122 with the same shape case and convert it for use on your F 122.

With insurance do you keep the item but get reimbursed, or does the keyboard go bye-bye?  That would be a terrible shame if it did.  I'd imagine super glue or epoxy as far as repair vs. replace.

That may be a good idea if superglue turns out not to work.

No clue. I've never claimed insurance on a shipment before. I'll discuss it with the seller. Hopefully the shipping company covers some of the cost and I keep the keyboard. Hopefully.

I would just use it without the case top.

if you do get a M122 make sure it has the two stage feet. There were ones made with the larger upper shell and small feet that are not compatible with model F.

I believe you will have to do a little modding anyway but it shouldn't be too bad.

Do people seriously not know how to ship or something?  Even if that got to me in one piece, I'd be beyond pissed if someone shipped to me in a cardboard box with some ****ty tissue paper as the only packaging material.  Where's the bubble wrap or packing foam?  Where the air packets or wadded up paper?  That's how you pack a gift bag, it's not how you pack a package you're shipping.

Good luck with the insurance claim.   If you got it on eBay you may be able to get your money back if you don't get the claim processed and sent to you.

If he charged you anything for shipping I would take off some stars.

With shipping insurance claims they are handled by the shipper (except COD but nobody does that anymore). The receiver doesn't do anything. I would contact the seller, tell them about the shipping damage, tell them to file a shipping insurance claim with the shipping company and then give you a partial refund in compensation.

To be totally fair there was actually this much tissue paper in the box. Not that I'm really arguing. Clearly tissue paper is not enough for something as notoriously brittle as this.

Tissue paper is fine for lightweight items, but crap for something heavy.  Should have been bubble wrap.  If it was packaged by the seller insurance will likely not cover squat due to the improper packaging.

Apart from the suggestions above about getting an old M122 case, this sort of thing is easy to fix.  Two part epoxy should glue that up fine, and you could also get epoxy putty to handle small gaps.

Do think you're due something back from the seller, but I wouldn't go leaving negative feedback before you've discussed things a bit.

Yeah, the packaging was surprisingly poor, but the damage isn't extensive. I'm typing on the keyboard right now.

On an unrelated note, considering most of these keycaps are now labelled wrongly, is it possible to just replace them? Do people sell replacement buckling spring keycaps?

I recommend ANSI-modding and using the keycaps from an old 101-key Model M.

This x1000. This has happened to me before, but luckily, the contents of the package made it in one piece. Regardless, insufficient packaging material when shipping anything is completely unacceptable. Everyone in this community appreciates a carefully packaged shipment, especially when containing something they might have been searching for a long time.

I've never done more invasive surgery on a keyboard than just removing it's keycaps. Going from removing keycaps to a total transplant seems somewhat of a jump...

If it's only replacing the case, it shouldn't be that big a job.  And there are lots of people here who can help you with illustrations and tips and tricks.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Deduct points on feedback for sure. He should have cocooned that board in miles of bubble wrap, especially if he charged you for shipping (and for a half ton keyboard, who wouldn't).

But at least it still works? Just go naked :)

packing peanuts.

Same thing for my cortron board. The solenoid had it's own bit of cardboard protecting it, then there was cardboard, then bubblewrap them it was in a box almost completely full of packing peanuts. Hard to believe they only charged $12 for shipping.

as far as poor packing, IIRC there was one GHer in Brazil who got an extremely poorly wrapped board.

Well, I bought my board from a fellow GHer who personally restored and ISO-modded it. And he cared. But about those fellas from ebay.... 2/3 of them just heard we crazy geeks pay a lot of money for old boards. Point.

There are, however, a few factors that make the F-122s particularly hard to ship.

They are particularly heavy, for one, and the plastic is particularly brittle, for another. Also, those front corners are unusually weak by design and easily stressed.

I suspect that most modern plastic keyboards would have survived the blow that shattered the corner of this behemoth.

But that is just all the more reason to pack well. And, just personally, I wouldn't expend nearly as much energy packing a $15 keyboard as I would a $100 specimen.
