Is this suppose to happen? (Acrylic case from Massdrop came in)
« on: Mon, 01 December 2014, 20:50:16 »
Bare with me this is my first time installing a case for any keyboard.

So last weekend my Acrylic case from MD came in and I got around to installing it today. As I tried to screw in the screws I noticed that they didn't fit and were missing the threadings. Are these screw threads suppose to come in with the Massdrop package or am I suppose to buy them separately?

that definitely seems like a production error on the case makers end. With all the damn delays MD has with quality control stuff you'd think they'd get this right.

Thanks for the quick reply, are these threadings suppose to be already installed inside the case?

so I don't know specifically for this case (hah!) but in general there are two types of screws:
the normal kind everyone uses to thread into inserts and the like
self tapping screws with a coarse pitch and sharp threads that are designed to "tap" the material on their way in.

If the case was designed with self-tapping screws in mind (and there are some plastics designed for it) then it should come with self tapping screws. In such a scenario I would expect the holes to be just round blind or through holes.

If the screws are normal machine screws then the case is likely missing some threaded insert.

If the screws are not pointy and are flat at the end, then you're screwed.

First off, what case is it?

There are three different ways that screws are handled on acrylic parts:

1. Unthreaded holes with tightly threaded (machine) screws:

Like the Tex Poker style case. On these, the screws make the thread the first time you use them. Be careful as it's pretty easy to strip the newly created thread by overtightening. The Tex case uses standard Poker II screws.

2. Metal thread inserts glued in or held by friction:

3. Through bolts with nuts:

Once we know what case you have, we can advise you further.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.
