Help, G80 is broken, how to fix?
« on: Fri, 05 December 2014, 05:01:15 »
Hello,

I received a Das Keyboard II (G80) with POM keycaps off eBay, which listed it as clean and in 100% working condition; however, when I finally received it and tried to use it, I realized that the keyboard does not register a lot of keys.

The green keys are ones that work, the grey ones do not work at all. I have tried it on different computers to confirm that it wasn't a problem with the computer.

Is there a way to fix this? I really like the keyboard; it looks good, is clean, and has great keycaps, except it doesn't work.

What are some potential reasons for the keyboard acting like this? All of the switches, even the ones that don't register, seem to be good.

Hopefully someone has a better idea than I do.

Thanks!

Did you check the solder joints? Perhaps there's some cold solder joints that need to be touched up.
Did you clean the switches? Maybe there is dust or other junk inside it that is causing the contacts not to work properly.

Almost certainly a solder problem. Should be an easy fix though, just lay some more on there

Check for the easy things first, like loose internal connections if it's not a one piece PCB design model. Check the internal connection for the USB cable. Then while you have it open, short some of the legs of the switches that didn't register and see if it does send a scan code. If so then it's switches. If still no joy, it's probably something else like poor joints on other components before the matrix, bad controller...
