Question about the Novatouch
« on: Sat, 10 January 2015, 18:29:01 »
Hi everyone, I have a question regarding the Novatouch. However, I heard about this issue about loose keycaps on the stem. Is this true for most mx keycaps? Are they loose on the novatouch? I heard about this when it was first released and stuff. Or does it happen only to certain keycaps? Thank you for the help.

I have a Novatouch as a daily driver at the office. Caps are no better or worst in term of looseness compared to either MX's or Topre's.

On most keys, whatever keycaps you put on will fit tightly. You need a keycap removing to to safely pull them out, as with any Cherry MX keyboard.

On some keys the keycaps are a little bit lose, to the point that I have been able to remove some of them with my bare hands. I think it has to do with the kind of plastic they use for the sliders, which has a very low friction coefficient (which is excellent for the feel of the switch).

If you ever have a problem with a keycap that is a little bit too lose, it can be fixed very easily by inserting a small piece of thin paper between the slider and the keycap, as you would do as usual on a Cherry MX keyboard. I did not have to do that on my Novatouch.

So to sum it up: no issue here.

On Cherry MX keyboards, I can sometimes pull off the Esc key with my bare hands. Not so on the NovaTouch.

awesome guys thank you :D I have another question. I heard some stabilized keys rattle excessively. Are there defects to the stabs. Or do they make little noise like every mech KB does? Thank you guys.  A little noise is understandable.

Typing on the NovaTouch now, I don't hear any rattling in the stabilised keys.

The only key that is a bit louder than the others is the Space Bar. It has a louder "Thock" when you bottom it out and on the rebound if you release it quickly. It is definitely louder than the Space Bar on my Realforce.

In this post of mine, you can hear an audio sample of an unmodified Novatouch. At the end of the recording, I insist on the stabilized keys on purpose, so you can judge by yourself:
