Nothing worth living for in the US...
« on: Fri, 09 January 2015, 10:37:09 »
"It is now blatantly obvious that GMOs are nothing more than patented Pesticide Delivery Systems (PDS) designed to increase sales of poisonous agrochemicals such as Roundup, glufosinate, Bt, 2,4 D and neonicotinoids. To claim that GMOs are perfectly safe is equivalent to saying that pesticides, herbicides and fungicides—systemically laced at ever-higher levels into GMO-tainted human food and animal feed—are perfectly safe. And to make matters worse, hundreds of millions of pounds of Monsanto’s Roundup, the most widely used herbicide in the world, are now routinely sprayed on 160 different crops, just before harvest, including wheat, potatoes, oats, canola, flax, peas and dried beans. In other words, just about every non-organic item in your supermarket, or every item on your restaurant menu (bread, potatoes, meat, milk,) is now tainted with Roundup. "

Then eat organic? It isn't really that much more than buying from regular super markets, and buy your meat from local farmers. We shop at Whole Foods and buy only organic and belong to a co-op where mostly everything is local and organic, and it is sometimes cheaper than buying from a different supermarket.

In the US?
I think its not only in the US... in fact the US has safer food than many other places(though safe and healthy does have a fine line). At least the states HAS regulations and a debate about it. Some parts of the world, you just dont know what chemicals are used as pesticides.
I think we should be thankful that the food is edible and the water is clean... we arent in a third world country.

no?  The USA is getting pretty close to a 3rd world country, where the top 1% have everything and the bottom 99% have nothing.  Take a drive out to the "heartland", see the people.  See how they live.  Then take a drive to Manhattan.  See the 1,000 billionaires hiding in plain sight (watch out for their private security goons though, they'll break your balls, literally).  See their 12 homes around the globe.  See their 1,000 acre horse farms, their vintage Ferrari collections, their massive art collections.  See their 55,000 square foot beach houses (with indoor and outdoor tennis courts).

See the $90M whole-floor apartments in the sky.

Ask yourself what country you live in.  Ask yourself why you worship rich people.  Ask yourself why rich people pay less tax than you do.  Ask yourself why Wall Street Hedge Fund managers don't have to live by the same rules that you do.  Ask yourself why the biggest banks are allowed to gamble with your tax dollars.   Why is it heads they win, tails you lose?  What happened to the SEC?  the IRS?  the FBI?  the Justice Department?  the Courts?  Are they asleep?  Bought and paid for?  Incompetent?  You tell me, 'cuz I can't figure it out.

As for Monsanto, they are one of the most evil organizations that ever existed.  Agricultural runoff is now the biggest polluter of the water supply in the US.  Mainly because of Monsanto, but also because the plutocratic (and kleptocratic) CEO's who run the biggest American corporations have moved almost all manufacturing to China to increase profits for themselves, so the industrial pollution is centered over there now.  But it's a small planet, and the pollution eventually comes back around to the USA again.

What can you do?  Don't give up.  You can fight back.  First thing to do is to vote.  If you don't vote, then you're not even trying.  Second, you can become active.  You can call your elected representatives.  Do you even know all the people who represent you?  Who is your state representative? Who is your City Council member?  Start emailing and calling these people.  Tell them you don't want to be poisoned by Monsanto.  Eventually they will listen.  Third, you could actually go out and protest something.  Fourth, if you don't want to get your head busted at a protest (who does), then give money to people who do the protesting or the fighting of pollution.  Lastly, whatever you do, don't give up.  Then you really are done.

Remember that all it will take is a few tweaks the US tax code, and a few regulatory enforcement officers to enforce the laws that we already have, and the world will become a lot more fair, and a lot less polluted.

^this LOL. I agree with you ethos. US is corrupt as it is and its not getting better. Its been a while since I lived in the states but I can assure you all those problems are not limited to the US. Gap between the rich and poor? Corrupt government? and on topic, questionable food? Yes, the financial crisis from wal street was a big "**** you" to the world. Yes, the military power US holds is a big "**** you" to the world. Yes, the pure political power US holds over everyone else is.. yup you guessed it, a big "**** you".

Yet as a US citizen can we complain when there are many more places worse than the US? Im not refering to the stereotypical "compare us to Africa" but in terms of BASIC rights. Edible food. Freedom of speech. Free will. Since Im in Korea Ill give some examples here. Some time ago, a professor in Korea was sent to jail for speaking against the president. Porn is blocked in Korea. Gambling is illegal here unless youre a foreign citizen(online included). TBH, I feel privileged here just for holding a US passport, nothing else. BUT, we're all people. Why cant some citizens in certain countries say what they want? free will? Why cant some join Facebook? or watch youtube? Why cant we spend money the way we want? gamble?

My point is, we should be happy for who we are and where we are.

Why do you have to take OP's crazy train thread and make it good eth0s?

It is not because things are worse somewhere else that you cannot pin point what is wrong in your own country and try to better things according to your means.

AFAIK, in the US the political system allows private organizations to fund candidates' campaigns like the presidential for example. Someone said this is capitalism and he's right. It means the only purpose of a company is to make profit. So when big international companies pays hundred of thousands/millions dollars for the election of someone. Don't fool yourself by thinking these persons won't be indebted to them. They don't fund them for the sake of doing it. They expect something back such as permissive legislation in their favor. The way GMO's labeling campaign is slow down in the US is a good example. Last time I check there were not so many states allowed labeling them but many trying and getting denied. GMO's labeling is only harmful to the companies selling them whereas people would gain more information to choose from. If the government forbids it, ask yourself whom interests they try to defend.

It is called capitalism. And it is still better then commnusim.

The United States is not a pure capitalist economy.  More of a corporate capitalist, maybe plutocracy, with protections for certain interests.  We are becoming a society of the haves and the have-nots.

Pure capitalism scares the sh!t out of me, by the way, because of the dehumanization and destruction to the environment.  While capitalism does create incredible innovation and choice in the marketplace, our long-term well-being become secondary to short-term benefit.  I will not act like I have any grand solution to these problems, because attempting to mold civilizations based your flawed vision leads to forcing your belief on others, and a potentially repressive system.  I simply react by attempting to care about people, live a low-impact lifestyle, and rant about environmental concerns.

Ethos is absolutely right.  You don't frickin ever give up if there is a problem that you identify that needs to be addressed.  There will always be critics, but if you feel something should be done, do something about it.
Wish I had some gif or quote for this space, but I got nothing

That's well put.

No, I don't.
But thanks for asking... I often get forgotten about on forums with everyone talking about my Dad and stuff, so it's nice to be asked a question now and again :)
