Beware of this Leopold FC660C auction
« on: Mon, 19 January 2015, 12:12:31 »
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Leopold-FC660C-Electrostatic-Capacitive-Switch-Keyboard-Dye-Sublimated-White-PBT-/331454162971?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4d2c35281b

Looks like a stellar deal at first, but I'd say there's a 95% chance you won't get your item. Seller has very little feedback, all from ancient transactions. Only recent activity was another auction from yesterday in which he sold 10 bikes, way under price also, with free shipping -- just doesn't make any sense: http://www.ebay.com/itm/All-Terrain-26-Mens-Fat-Tire-Mountain-Bike-Lightweight-Aluminum-Frame-Mud-Snow-/331452695199?pt=US_Bicycles_Frames&hash=item4d2c1ec29f

No actual pics of the products.

I feel like people are going to snap up all 10 because they just can't resist -- unfortunately I don't think these Leopolds exist.

I think this guy is going to miss rent or something, and is doing a fast cash grab. Obviously he has some experience with the mechanical KB community -- you don't just randomly pick a product like a white dyesub Leopold to scam with, unless you know what it is. Hate to think this guy is among us.

Also, his profile says he's in the US, but shipping from HK in the product description. Fishy!

was my initial thought, although you need to be willing to tie up $110 for the sake of testing this seller's integrity...

Nah, they "fell off a truck"

Not even sure about that, seller could easily pull $170 or so with just a simple pic of the boxes. No pic = no product at all, I am guessing.

I agree completely. Not worth the risk at all. I was just making a joke about the price to him. I don't feel like this is anywhere near legit.

And I guess its one way to get a quick loan that you have > 30 days to pay back.

That's the only way his scam can work.

He knows he can't scam most people, but he doesn't need to. He only needs to scam a few foolish enough to let the time window pass by for claims. The rest he can just refund if you get really angry and threaten to leave negative feedback. Because paypal doesn't allow you to file claims once time is up, they will not even have records for the number of times he scammed people.

So basically since this seller is estimating a delivery date of 8-35 days, you really have 38-65 days to file a claim on PayPal.

Hmm..............

Well you have that long to file a claim with ebay, I'm not 100% sure how paypal works in this process.

My buddy did. He did not get the TV, which is not surprising, but he just couldn't resist. He said that eBay emailed him proactively a few days ago to tell him it was a scam and he will get refunded.

I think what is happening is that all those passwords that got stolen some time back are being used on unsuspecting or currently defunct accounts. I'm not sure how they are able to tie it back to actually get the $$ unless they also successfully got into someone's PayPal account. Even if they did that, I'm not sure how the would get the money considering how restrictive PayPal's policies are on transferring money.

Again, I remind anyone who's thinking about "taking a chance" that there are no keyboards. There's no payoff. Best case scenario you give the seller a loan for a couple months, worst case you receive a brick in the mail or something and it becomes a big hassle with the dispute system.

This is a classic too good to be true auction... I know the price feels really tempting, but don't fall for it. it's all liessss

I wish there was a better way to report these sellers. I realize there is a report feature but I can't seem to find anything under it to use that makes any sense in these situations.

As you guys all talk about how this user is getting the money out, I was recently approached for a money laundering ring through paypal where they would supposedly pass the money through my paypal account to clean the funds. Now what part of that is true, I don't know. Generally best not to deal with those things.

I tried buying one of these "ZOMG" Deals through ebay once and got a keychain instead of the hard drive I ordered. The seller then asked for me to send the item back tracked for the refund (with the price I paid being less than the shipping to return the keychain). If you call paypal they'll usually side with you on this but if the seller requests the return of the item then it can raise complications. Generally paypal gives you 45 days to start a claim.

From paypal:
You can open a dispute in the Resolution Center to contact a seller directly and resolve a problematic transaction. You have 45 days from the payment date to open a dispute.

Basically be careful of these types of transactions because even though you're likely to get your money back (provided you realize this is high risk, others may be caught in that waiting period / shipping period and miss their chance at a refund) there can be a lot of hassle

I want to start my own Leopold auction...

Hell, forget that I've ever said (like 20 times) on this forum that I am not a Topre fan. I have every model of Topre ever produced, ok? And every possible keycap set. And I will happily sell my entire collection to asdfwhatever for just $2000 shipped. Only money orders accepted.

Of course they sold out...

Now there's another one, only $89 this time.

I totally fail to understand this.

Are there really so many fools? [in retrospect, sorry I asked this question.]

Is there no such thing as paypal restrictions? Don't you need photo ID to open a bank account and you can't just link a new bank account to paypal? How does the scammer figure he can take out the money he just swiped from others, without running the risk of a chargeback?
