using cherry MX caps on cherry MY.
« on: Tue, 31 March 2015, 02:24:27 »
Found a super cheap Cherry board (G81-1800 HAU) but didn't realize it had MY switches until I received it  :-[

Seems like I could mod it to be used without stabs, but it might ruin it. Anyone have any advice for using MX caps in MY switchds??

MX and MY use the same mount and are totally interchangeable which is why many people buy G81s just for the caps

You legitimately want to use Cherry my?
Seems like an odd choice.

Does that mean you can put MX switches in these boards?

MY keyboard use stab things more like Costar... sort of. I put crap keycap from thing like Razer Black Widow that I salvaged on MY keyboard before so it was still useable and left it in the charity shop. Modern MY are indeed really awful, but the original design is not that much different feeling from MX blacks actually.
Technically you can put MX switches... by removing the MY plate/membrane/switch assembly and replacing it with a G80 PCB from an equivalent model. I have done that many many many times to 'yucky' cosmetically MX G80 board to make it 'like new' again with case, caps from MY model.

I got a pristine board with an 1800 layout for $5. The switches are kinda mushy, but for $5 it will be a great way to show off hyperfuse or triumph Adler GMK!!

I'll have to look into that!! Thanks!
