I have an M13 Model M that came with a broken trackpoint. it is not just non-working; it is physically broken and has come loose from the keyboard (but is still connected by some wire).

Since I don't like the trackpoint function anyway, I would like to remove it entirely. I am not planning on taking apart the entire keyboard, so would prefer to just disengage that trackpoint somehow so that I can put in a regular set of Model M keycaps and not accidentally have to touch that filthy old trackpoint tip.

ALTERNATIVELY

I could repair the trackpoint and sell the keyboard. If anyone can give me ideas it will be very appreciated.
Most of the modding can be done on your own once you break through the psychological barriers.

Is the stick broken off from the base or is the whole base off the barrel frame?

The wire just leads to a second controller board that you can unplug it from if the whole base is already broken off.
