Adding LED's to roccat ryos
« on: Sat, 03 October 2015, 03:48:12 »
So i got a very cheap brand new roccat ryos with mx blacks.
There is a roccat ryos pro and a roccat ryos.
They seem identical im wondering if i can just pop in 3mm leds?I know its not much info but thought some of you guys might know.

If you already have it, your best bet would be to just open it up and see if there's holes/pads on the PCB for LED's. If there is you should double check if there are resistors already soldered on to the PCB.

Cool cheers wll do that.I assume the resistors are the little rectangular boxes near the holes?

assuming your PCB is exactly the same as this one then there are definitely holes for LED's but the image is very blurry so i can't tell if there are resistors but it doesn't look like it so you'd have to solder on some SMD diodes as well.

Agreed, looks like they've put solder on all the pads but no resistors.

@iludez - You'll probably need to remove the solder from the LED holes using a soldapult or desoldering braid but if the case isn't too tight to the back of the PCB you can just add the resistors on top of the existing solder.  Be sure to use a bit of fresh solder or some flux and make sure it all melts so you get a good joint :)

If you click on the image it does zoom in.I thought the little things beside the switches were resistors?Sure looks like it to me.
Stoked i can add leds though very happy. If i do add smd resistors where is the optimal place?

Ah nevermind i see where the resistors should be.Can you guys tell me what size and wattage resistors should be?

The little things you can see are diodes (you can tell because they always have a line across them at one end so you know which way they go)  The LEDs go in the two small holes below the big black dots and the resistors for them go vertically on the two pads slightly to the right of them :)

Yep i derped and realised afterwards what i was actually looking at.
Any idea on resistor type?

They are sold by size, usually they use 0603 on keyboards but looking at that pic they look smaller than the switch pin holes, so I'd guess they're probably 0402 - I would wait for someone to confirm that though as I'm no expert.

The other important spec is the resistance which would depend on the colour and model of LED you're using and how it's wired up (which as someone else made it we have no idea)  For testing purposes assume they're on the 5v from USB and use the specs of whatever LEDs you have in this calculator - if you get it wrong they'll be too dull so be sure to test one before filling up the whole board!

Really appreciate the replies guys.
So looks like ill go ahead and order some 3mm uv leds and wait for someone to comment on the correct resistors?

That'll help you find the resistor value (it'll change depending on the color of the led) and the size is fairly easy to figure out.
Check out winkeyless.kr/en or gonskeyboardwork.com, I think they have the size of the smd resistors written down.
