Difference between keyboards
« on: Wed, 30 September 2015, 09:46:06 »
Hi guys. I'm from Brazil and new to geekhack.
I want to change my logitech g710+ for a new keyboard and after doing some research i discovered a "new world". It may sound silly but i never knew that there were keyboards made of different materials, changeable keycaps etc. For me all that existed was some popular brands with their main keyboards lines and you didin't have much to think when buying keyboards, except for switches, lights and stuff. Right know i'm really interested in buying the ducky shine 4. The problem is that it's too hard to get ducky keyboards from Brazil, if i really want to i'm gonna have to import it from U.S Amazon. I'm willing to do that since i like how compact, good looking (nice lightning effect is important for me) this keyboard is. Before my research my choices were: k70 rgb and blackwidow chroma, because it's easier to find here in Brazil, also i use my keyboard mainly for games like wow, dota2 etc.

Alright, after all that history my real question is, besides lightning effects and type of switches, what's the big difference between a ducky shine 4 and the k70, bw chroma? I mean, everywhere i read people say ducky built quality is way better and all, but isn't it still made of plastic (abs keycaps like the others)? Just want to know ta little better of his building materials since i've never really saw one. Sorry about my english and the big text. Thank you!

Hi

I have 2 ANSI Ducky Shine 4 k-boards, not the standard Shine 4 k-boards.
The first board is a Ducky Shine 4 SCE bought on Massdrop and made in 500 ex.

This board has Cherry MX Brown/Clears switches on the same board and Duckys Grey/Blue PBT blank keycaps set.

The Brown/Clears switches.

https://www.massdrop.com/buy/ducky-shine-4-special-community-edition

The second board is the 69 Edition Fire Version with 9 different switches on the same board and with ABS keycaps. Number 0165 of 2000 made (I think it is so).

My 69 with Galaxy Class keycaps set bought on Masdrop, the spacebar is Duckys.

https://www.massdrop.com/buy/galaxy-keycaps-set

My Shine 4 69 is bought here: https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_list&c=134

The k70 has no standard bottom row (Ctrl, Win, Alt, FN/Menu and the spacebar) so if you're gonna change the keycaps, Ducky Shine 4 has a standard bottom row.

Very nice keyboards bro. So with the k70 i can't change keycaps, thank you for the information.

I really want to test ducky but like i said it's hard to find, the only one available have green switches, which i've never tested. Do you think its good for gaming? Also, k70's base are made of aluminum, what about ducky shine 4? Couldn't find the type of plastic they use, it seems very good material by the looks.

The difference between brown and clear switches are noticeable?

You can change the keycaps but not the Ctrl, Win, Alt, FN/Menu and spacebar from a standard keycaps set  will  fit.

You can take a look in this link: http://www.maxkeyboard.com/mechanical-keycap-layout-and-size-chart.html

As you can see the k70 don't use the same bottom row as Ducky, Das, Deck in the link.

There is some Green, Blue switches on the Ducky 69 k-board and I don't like to play games with Blue/Green switches.

I'm playin the games on my Ducky Shine 3 with Cherry MX Red or my Ducky Shine 3 YYY Cherry MX Black.

My Ducky Shine 3 Cherry MX Red with Tai-Hao Miami keycaps set and 550 Paracord Miami sleeved USB cable.

My Ducky Shine 3 YYY Cherry MX Black. The yellow keycaps are not Duckys own.

Bought on Aliexpress for some time ago. Black, Blue, Brown and Red switches.

The Blackwidow has poor build quality, the K70 has a non-standard bottom row, but the Ducky is very good.

Greens are not the best for gaming. They have very strong springs and something called "hysteris" which means they reset higher than the actuation point, so you have to release the switch almost to the top before being able to press it again. Not very good for FPS movement or anywhere you need to double-tap quickly.

Reds and Blacks are "best" for gaming, they are linear and have no tactility at the actuation point. Browns have a slight bump at actuation, but have very rough sliders and are very "scratchy". Clears have a bigger tactile bump and are very nice for both typing and gaming.

In terms of spring strengths: Greens > Blacks > Reds, Browns, Blues. Clears are similar to Black, but the spring starts off softer and ends harder, it has a steeper force profile.

You should be able to find a company that sells CoolerMaster CMStorm keyboards in your country. The CMStorm XT is a full size board.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.
