Help me pick a custom
« on: Thu, 05 November 2015, 08:29:09 »
So there's the Mira, the Jane v2, and the modern Kishsaver. I have very little money these days, but I think I can scrape enough together for one of these. Help me choose!

I've been a MX guy for a long time, but I've always loved the look of Kishsavers, so there's that. But I have a good stock of MX switches in my closet, so that's a plus for the two MX customs. I mostly use 60% boards, but would like something a bit bigger for planting on my desk at home.

Aaah, I can't decide. Is any of these any better than the others in terms of quality or programmability?  Help!
I'm back.

Have you tried buckling spring at all? Because if you haven't, you should probably get an M just to try. If you have tried it and you just can't decide between these keyboards, then you should probably make a pros/cons list. List all features that are unique to one or two of the keyboards, put point values to them, and a simple adding up should give you an answer. And if that answer feels wrong, your points are probably not accurate ;)

Ok, I haven't used an M since high school (early 90's), so I really have no idea how it feels. I have no BS artisans or parts. This makes me think I'm better going with one of the MX options.

Does anyone know the difference between the Mira and the Jane?  Quality?  PCB features?

I'm not sure I'm one to give you advice, but I'm personally going for the Kishsaver! I've got plenty of MX, have Topre coming, and have just potentially discovered an old Alps board. All that's missing for me is that sweet sweet Buckling Spring.

The modern kish is going to be something that will likely be very hard to get in the future.
The only risk here is that you need to be sure that the modern kish has quality parts that replicate the feeling of the model F well.

The other two boards are just Cherry TKL aluminum keyboards. Nothing all that special about them when you think about it.

You guys. I'm such a sucker for the "this is the only time this will ever be made" type thing, and I've always loved the look of the Kishsavers. Sooo tempting.

If that falls through for whatever reason I have an XT that compgeek on DT sold me that I don't think I'll ever use (tested and working on an original IBM too). You can have that instead.

I'll just chime in and say the Ellipse Model F as well. I'm personally going with the 77 as I can't live without my arrow cluster, and I can program that cluster to act as a numpad in a different layer.

I've ordered the Jane and can't wait to get mine, but at the end of the day it's another custom MX board. When's the last time a new Model F was made? So far as I know (I could be wrong), it was by IBM, and those are the standards by which Ellipse is going. If the new boards are up to the same quality, if not better, this will be a once-in-a-lifetime chance.
Provided Ellipse doesn't do another run.

As long as Ellipse's F's are as high quality as the originals, I don't think it's much of a contest. Everyone should have a Model F.

I would personally get in on the Ellipsavers if I had to pick only one. (I dunno about anyone else but I like this name for them). I'm making room for an F77, F62, Mira, and the CF-LX carbon fiber 60%, though. :P My wallet is absolutely gone but nothing new there lol. I like the design of the Mira better than the Jane, but I appreciate the understated aesthetic of the Jane.

Does anyone know the difference between the Mira and the Jane?  Quality?  PCB features?

The Jane uses TX87 PCB, a pretty great one. Obviously can't speak on the quality of the Mira as it hasn't even been produced yet.

I've heard great things about the TX87 PCB, I'm still waiting to get my Jane so I can't speak any further on it :(. However Jane round 2 is very promising, I like all the new features and am planning on joining as well. Like Hwood said you can't compare it to the Mira since it hasn't been made yet but to me Jane seems like a modern day KMAC and that's what I'm really looking forward too.

Yeah, that's why I was really interested in it. Basically like a KMAC II with a good PCB.

That's satisfying to know, I'm really excited to mess around with the TX87 PCB, it seems very well designed. I'm also hoping that a small group buy can be started for the diffuser for round 1, that would be a nice last touch up to the board.

I haven't had experience with it yet but to start I heard it is very is to program your board with. This board also gives full LED customization as well whether you're doing in-switch, SMD LEDs, or both. The benefit to the SMD LEDs is their RGB capability.

It's the TX87 PCB, so it's designed by leeku. Anything made by leeku is A-class, or so I've heard.

I'd say kishaver for its novelty, any Cherry based for its practicality to keep using your MX stuff.

I think Ellipse will probably sell his model F's continuously.

The real answer is OTD or nuffin'. But the best answer for your question is the TGR Jane. I quite like that board. Too bad I can't swing the Round 2 right now  :'(

imo there will be many opportunities for cherry customs, yet there are little to no options for buckling spring remakes. I don't think it's worth the risk of possibly missing out.

So far it seems Ellipse is leaning toward a one-and-done run. Pre-orders will be shipped first, then orders will be taken for a month or so, and then that's it.

Could be totally off, though.
