Cherry G80-3000 & GMK Dolch
« on: Thu, 07 January 2016, 22:06:27 »

I bought a Cherry G80-3000 off of Amazon months ago, maybe even a year. I also bought GMK Dolch keycaps from Zeal (including the modifiers.) After removing the original keycaps, I noticed that the GMK keycaps that required stabilizers had become rather unresponsive. I know that Cherry stabilizers have a reputation for being more 'mushy' than Costars, however the board currently feels so bad I would never use it. It's also got a few pieces that may be broken. I've got a couple of different issues, so here goes:

I also seemed to break off a stabilizer on the Right Shift. First question: how do I fix the stabilizer?

Second question: Every time I try to put the spacebar on, it won't depress on the left side. I don't know why, but it won't actuate. It just sags on the left side. The right side actuates. Left side sags. How to fix?

Third question: On almost every single stabilized key (on the numpad + for instance) if you depress the key then take your finger and move it from the top to the bottom while depressed, you feel the key rock as iff see-sawing. This feels terrible and is prevalent on almost all stabilized keys. Is this normal?

I can tell you that it's not normal.

By looking at the spacebar, the stabilizer bar that you see is supposed to be underneath the metal plate. Unless I'm mistaken, it's on the wrong side.

If you take photos of the other stabilized keys with the keycap removed, it will reveal more information.

Also, Cherry stabilizers are mushy stock but can be quite easily modified to not be mushy and offer the same harsh bottom-out that Costar stabilizers provide.

Definitely impossible.

You have to clip the stabilizer bar underneath the switch, like this:

Cherry G80s don't have metal plates. They're PCB only.

If you look close you'll notice that it's actually the PCB, not metal plate, notice that there're holes for stabilizers to mount at the right shift position

@OP: the stabilizer is quite easy to assemble, just put the clip back to the holes in the side pieces, you can look at the other stab on the PCB to get a reference, then just snap it back in the 2 holes on the PCB, well it's hard to explain but you'll understand once you take a look at the part and the mounting hole

You'll need a 2x stab wire (as it appears that's completely missing) and a new stab insert. I'm not sure where to find stabs CONUS but you can find them on Taobao

Thats it! Also, I didn't notice until I started trying to secure the bar under the spacebar switch, but, it's critical that you snap the bar into the two stabilizer bottom latches as well!

Also, big shout out to SpAmRaY for graciously sending me a stabilizer for my shift!

GH coming through in flying colors yet again. <3
