Question about availability of the Ducky YotG Edition
« on: Wed, 13 January 2016, 16:08:51 »
So this looks simply superb, but it seems to have gone out of stock everywhere a couple of months ago. Is there any further possibility of more being produced, or is it likely over and done with for good? If it's the latter, I'll probably not hold out for one.

Usually with their "Year of the..." boards they tend to make only one run and once it sells out then you can't get it anywhere else. Don't let that stop you though, you can post in classifieds and mechmarket asking for one. I'm sure somebody will be willing to sells theirs eventually.

I don't know if it's available at these places anymore but these were the last links I found with some available--for expensive prices.  And there was an Indonesia link someone else posted as well.

There seem to be "not enough stock" to even add 1 from this link even though add to cart works for the brown (but it says no stock for the red).
http://www.vsgamers.es/en/product/mechanical-gaming-keyboard-ducky-channel-year-of-the-goat-rgb-cherry-brown

And as far as it looking pretty:
The RGB LED's on the YOTG Are identical to the ones on the Shine 5 in type and exact brightness level (the PCB's used on the shine 5 and YOTG are the same).  it's the keycaps (more than the white bezel itself) that make it look so much prettier than the Shine 5.  If you take the keycaps off a YOTG and put them on a shine 5, it becomes so much brighter, equal to how the YOTG looks, JUST from the keycaps.  So you can turn an existing shine 5 into a ghetto YOTG with the same color vibrancy and even pastel like light/sunlight vs dark room appearances by simply buying a white doubleshot ABS keycap set like the new ones the RGB Poker has been pictured with.

it's THIS exact keycap set--(the exact same one that is on the Year of the Goat):

The black ones were here:
https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/12347806_964736443594066_7471734777468137304_n.jpg?oh=106992fc1a8514d4f17d2fcb3f3769cb&oe=56DB7B15
But it's the white keyset that you would want.  The black set (which is what the Shine 5 comes with already) simply isn't anywhere near as pretty.

All you need to make a shine 5 look MUCH prettier is that white keycap set (or one without the Chinese writing on it).

The problem is, that keycap set that I linked from ducky's facebook isn't for sale anywhere outside of Taiwan, unless someone can find a set.  I'm pretty sure any white doubleshot backlit compatible ABS keycap set will work well, though.

Then you can follow up by painting the outside bezel and case of a Shine 5 keyboard with a white coating to match the keycaps, and then you will have almost all of the prettiness of the YOTG but without the mouse emulation function, the Ducky One (shine 3 type) case and the dedicated status RGB indicators above the number keypad.

Great work falkentyne! Those prices are quite undesirable though, best of luck spanyam in your search. :thumb:

Yeah I was suggesting that he would have MUCH better luck trying to just hunt down an ABS white doubleshot keycap set and a regular Shine 5, than trying to buy an expensive YOTG.

I do very much like the micro USB connector on the YOTG/One (which uses the old shine 3 style) far more than the unroutable bizarre Shine 4/5 positioned connector, but if he's willing to just buy a Shine 5 and hunt down a much easier (and cheaper!) backlight compatible white ABS keycap set for it, he'll be happy with the results, unless he was just a collector for collection's sake.

Even the white keycaps on a Vod Ray Team wolf RGB change it yourself (hot swappable switch) keyboard would bring a shine 5 to vibrant life (if you can deal with the hideous vod ray legends!)

Btw, if you're still here, have you considered THIS keyboard instead of the Shine 5?

may not look like much, but after you watch this video, it might change your mind.
the only downside is that Cherry MX RGB keyswitches are not easily purchasable from anyone yet, but it does accept them.

Thanks for the amazing and detailed reply! Looks like the MX red ones are generally not available. Overall, MX browns would certainly provide a good middle ground, though.

As for the other options, I think modding the last keyboard is a bit beyond me at the moment, given my time availability. I also don't like so many extra characters on the linked keycap set.

I'm actually buying this board because I now work right next to my dad in our home office, and he's starting to get disturbed by the music from my Model M (which is still the most satisfying typing experience I've had yet). But now that the YotG's not readily available, I have some time to think it over, despite how amazing it looks.

Would the YotG be usable as a daily driver, or would it be susceptible to getting dirty over time? I'm generally quite clean when it comes to my desk habits, but dust and oil from the skin does build up over time. If that's the case, then between the Ducky Legend and the Shine 5, which one makes a better daily use board?

RGB lighting is indeed cool looking, but if the solidity of the Legend feels anything like the Model M, then I'll stick with that. I'm also wondering if this Vortex White PBT keycap set looks good on either the Shine 5 or the Legend: https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1330

Thanks!

You can still buy a YOTG on the LDLC store, but I don't know if they ship outside France/belgium/luxembourg/switzerland.

However this is surprisingly overpriced compared to other website, but you can still have on here  ;D
