Cleaning your artisan key caps & Blanks
« on: Sun, 01 May 2016, 06:24:35 »
Hey I traded some key caps and some that I got are a little dirty. How do I wipe down the caps with out destroying them? I got some 40% alcohol solution. Some places are hard to reach (e.g. the nose in clack skulls) others I am just not sure if the alcohol would destroy any coats (e.g 2 white Gateron PBT blanks) anyone can share some of their insights?
Ducky Shine 5 w Mx Browns  | White fox w Zelio's purple 67g | Gateron Blank set

Current Aims: Jack O Lantern is my end game cap. Looking for one.

Soak with denture cleaner?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Soak with denture cleaner?

+1

You can search around in GH, there are people using warm water bath with denture tabs that are used to clean bracers etc.

No one said anything about soaking. What I've been doing is put a little spit on the edge of a micro fiber cloth and clean the affected area. Works every single time.

Not sure if I'd back up the spit method  :)) but what I usually do is just do a quick rinse under the sink, not too cold or hot, and then pat it down with a towel and let it air dry. I've heard the denture tab method works fine as well (probably ACTUALLY cleans it).

Photographers generally breathe on their lenses and wipe away the moisture with microfiber cloths, you could try cleaning any delicate artisan keycaps you have similarly. Alternatively you may be able to pick up isopropyl alcohol from your local pharmacy, just tell them its for cleaning purposes.
May all your key presses strike true.

I soak in dishwashing soap, clean with water, get my favorite DKCT (dedicated keyboard cleaning toothbrush) and make sure they are spotless! Even painted caps like the old Iron Mask's from HKP are free from harm in that process :)

It would have to be a pretty stiff brush!

Like a wire brush
