More I look more I am confused
« on: Mon, 13 June 2016, 05:26:51 »
Hi

I am looking to get a nice compact keyboard, that supports mac and windows via switches. I have narrowed it down to the following keyboards but still can't seem to decide.

I am aware that not all of these keyboards have support for mac but they are still on the list.

1) HHKB ( supports both), but hard to get keycaps.
2) Leopold FC660C (although no support for mac) love the layout.
3) KUL-ES87
4) matias 60% (but only can choose mac or win)
5) CODE 61-Key ( supports for mac and win)

I would like to hear what you guys think, and if I have missed any other keyboards.

Thanks

You can find your answer as soon as you dig deeper.
You have a Cherry MX keyboards in the list. What mx switches you prefer?

I think your best bet is the HHKB which support both mac and windows and it use Topre switch

They feels really good and the build quality is good!

I am almost sold on HHKB, I am just little annoyed that keycaps are not as easy to get as Cherry.

I think you should be more specific about what you mean by 'supports Mac'. Any keyboard will work on a Mac, you may have to remap the control and alt keys to get your keys how you like it in OSX but that's about it. I think if you're looking for a keyboard which can do more specific things such as the controls they have bound to the base layer of the function keys, then maybe a Matias keyboard is your best choice? Not 100% sure on what Mac controls they have though.

Right, sorry I was not aware of that. What I meant was to be able to use keyboard for mac os and windows with out having to change a lot.

I will do some more reading my self on this.. But thanks for clarifying it.

Yup. I have a cheap rosewill at work and a kbt pure at home. I just remapped control and caps lock to command and I'm done.

Volume shortcuts on the pure work with both OSes out of the box. I wrote a script and bound it to f14/f15 to adjust brightness for the rosewill.

I've used all sorts of keyboards on a Mac and Windows, including HHKB, CODE TKL, Model M, SSK, NED APC-H4100E, ...

The only thing I have to change is to swap Win and Alt, which I do in Mac's System Preferences.

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
