Not bad. That would be kind of cool actually. But I don't need more keyboards unless I get them for free.

$28 shipping? WTF? I can barely accept $20.
I trolled Geekhack and all I got was an eponymous SPOS.

That's a great price, and it even comes with the optional keypad!

I'd buy it in a heartbeat, but I already have both flavors of the M4 (with and without trackpoint) and don't feel like spending the money to get the keypad.

True, but they are fun to type on compared to a standard rubber dome. The keys have a lot of 'snap' to them thanks to the sleeves. Build quality seems all over the place, though. The Lexmark built board I have is in great shape, but the Unicomp one I have is terrible. Both were new when I bought them (but no box, sadly).

The lexmark ones are definitely better.  Note, the "buckling rubber sleeves" do wear out.  But you can get replacement ones from Unicomp fairly cheaply.

Apparently, this seller isn't aware that all NIB M4/M4-1's are to be sent directly to me.

Collecting M4's is a bit of an obsession.  But, for the most part, I like to buy NIB...but don't keep much NIB.  I like to use them.

I go through cycles where I'll buy a bunch of new 'boards...and then eventually give several away and sell others.

Beautiful.  1989 and 1990 were good years for the Model M.

I have a June 1989 1391401 and a March 1990 1394540 Model M that actually has a speaker behind the speaker grill.  They are both very solid, rivets and all.

I'm very tempted to see how a never-before-used classic black label Model M compares to my used ones.  That board just might have to be sniped  :)

Random thought: The 51G', which was a black labeled Lexmark with a speaker (for the RS/6000) is my second favorite of the beige Model Ms after the silver-labeled 1390131.

Not really... unless you've been indoctrinated by clickykeyboards.com advertising.

The only real difference between Model M types is the M13 trackpoint.

I think you're getting mixed up with the myth that certain years of Model M are better than others. Which is incorrect.

There are several factors (out of which normal wear and missing rivets may be the two most important or otherwise the only two I know of) that may concur on the feel of a Model M.

On the other hand, I have a NIB 1401 and one 1986 0131 with 11 rivets missing. The 1930131 is crispier, more precise and has almost 0 ping. I got the 1401 first and was later surprised by the feel of the old, dirty 0131.

They both have black plastic plates on the interior. I was just wondering if there's anything special about the ones with beige/ivory plates.

No no. I was talking about the casing, and I was talking about the aesthetics of it. I'm not entirely convinced that there's any difference in feel between various years of Model Ms.

So is this a nice board or not??  Is it the same as the trackpoint unit that Unicomp sells for $99??   I like the size and form factor.

It's pretty mediocre. It's like a stiff scissor switch keyboard.

Unicomp no longer sells the Trackpoint ones, and I think the regular ones are going the same way too.

See my sig for a link to a review and lots of pics.

There just isn't right now a lot of decent Tenkeyless Compact keyboard alternatives out there.  The layout is pretty good and it even has arrow keys that the HHKB does not.

Plus, I just think it looks spiffy.
Show Image

I paid like $30 versus $300 for a HHKB.

I do think they look nice.  I'll probably pick up at least one of each.   I was just offered one of those this morning.   Word gets out that I'm BUYING  :)

Re the HHKB2......I keep trying to like it.  I prefer the keyfeel over that of my variable weighted Re^lforce, but I just switched back over to my new Das S and my immediate reaction was ......AAAAHHHHH.   Nice, comfortable, familiar layout.  Maybe I just can't type on anything else????

Did you know that the company that invented the inverted-T arrow layout came out with this a few years later for their Unix machines?

Description doesn't tell me much.  Did Cherry Corp do "specials" or is this a mod?

Says item is new, so I guess it's one of their specials. I've seen photos of some other special designs here on GH, iirc Sixty owns one. They're probably in the pictures thread, on one of the 218 pages...

To be honest, I planned to pop off the keycaps and burn the rest. It's a G81 after all, so burning it is the only appropriate application.

I've just got a M4-1 with the integrated mouse and found this thread!
I've tried it with a WinXP computer and all the F buttons and all the other grey buttons do not work.
Only the letter keys and the mouse work as they should.
Do I need a special driver for it?
I really hope there's nothing wrong with it hardware-wise.
Thanks:)
