Looking for a non pingy mechanical keyboard
« on: Thu, 08 December 2016, 08:57:02 »
Hello,
i am looking for a non pingy mechanical keyboard
currently, i am using a corsair K70 with MX brown which pings alot (especially the A key)

now i have a few questions as well:
1. do browns ping more than reds... most ping issues refer to mx browns
2. is there a proper and save way to reduce/eliminate ping (lubing, shelf liner etc.?)

what i absolutely need on a keyboard are dedicated media keys or atleast volume keys

i hope you can help me since the ping noise is driving me crazy

I'm not familiar with the pinging you're referring to regarding MX Browns. None of the MX Brown boards I own ping, but O-rings might help. Some thick liner under the board wouldn't be a bad idea, either. I don't know if it's coming from the case, desk or switch in your situation.

i am referring to the famous filco ping

ps. i tried O-rings, nothing
i tried a something under the keyboard, nothing

i read nearly everything on the internet about the ping issue but nothing worked

ps. the ping sound is coming from the switch resonating with the keyboard case since only a few keys are pinging

Just buy some flimsy piece of crap with no metal in it, like a G80-3000, or a rubber dome derivative like Topre.
Check my keyboard video reviews:

Perhaps try something with no metal plate inside, e.g. aluminium plate. Acrylic plate or plate-less can even be better to reduce the ping. Also, add some padding / foam underneath the PCB to eliminate empty space.

I was offended by the ping of some older IBM keyboards, and couldn't get use to the handsome Model M13, and eventually went for a rubber dome (IBM KPD-8923), and I'm now still partially a rubber dome person (HHKB with its plate-less Topre domes). I've also converted to linear also, but on a Noppoo 84 Choc-mini there's the steel mounting plate, so even my Gateron blacks with o-rings (to reduce key travel) 'ping', with less echos than the Model Ms in such a smaller 75% case. I kind of like it.

Miss this part.

I'll suggest getting a Sun Type-6 or Type-7 USB keyboard on eBay.de - they've some of the most decent domes - they "at least have volume keys". Pressing on Cherry browns are like having key presses suddenly obstructed by a few grains of sand, I couldn't care less for them. Cherry reds are also too light for my taste as I don't like to bottom out if the bottoming out is not 'cushioned' - so I don't have experience for both kinds of switches you mentioned.

Or perhaps this one? A higher-end keyboard with rubber-dome enabled capacitive switches (i.e. Topre):

Right, Matias Quiet Pro also has volume control buttons, and it has some modern (simplified) Alps switches 10+ times better than Cherry browns:

Here's the disassembly of its mini brother, the mini Quiet-Pro:

Didn't say if it has a metal plate or not. Rubber-dome boards can ping too, like my Topre-clone board by PLUM because it has a high quality steel mounting plate. The Novatouch seems having only a plastic upper housing, so probably won't ping.

Doch!
This one (Sun Type 7) though a rubber dome, is less than 24€ shipped and look super badass like a Unix expert keyboard:

Before spending money on another keyboard you might try just opening up your keyboard and lining the case with drawer liner. This is a common trick to mellow the sound and it might reduce or eliminate your ping.

No Leopold I have ever touched has made any type of 'pinging' while typing.
