Harvesting keycaps from electronic typewriters
« on: Sat, 13 December 2014, 18:58:00 »
Hey,

harvesting keycaps from electronic typewriters.
Does someone do it?
What typewriters to look for?
Does someone know typewriter models that have Cherry MX compatible keycaps?
Maybe some spherical keycaps ?

Probably the most popular typewriter people harvest from are Triumph Adlers for their caps (MX compatible). Other than that, I'm not sure how many electric typewriters use MX switches or which ones they are, many had older cherry switches like M6/M7. One that comes to mind is the Royal Satellite III, which can have MX blacks. And there are some that have Topre compatible caps. There are also some that have tee mount alps like the Sharp ZX-515

Here is a decent list of Triumph Adler models to get you started. By no means is exhaustive... and there are some other brands that used Cherry at times as well like AEG Olypmia.

Those cap are very cool, but I'd have to put them on something else where I didn't have to use standard caps with to fill out... seems very jarring. Would be great on a JD40 or something similar though to be sure.

Wow, those certainly look really cool. That is, if you can get used to that super low profile

It looks like a laptop keyboard, thank you very much for sharing, and congratulations on your finding. Please share some thoughts on the feeling of actually typing with them.
