help me find the right keyboard for work
« on: Wed, 17 March 2010, 05:29:05 »
I'm looking for a keyboard that I can take to work. Because I have to use it there, a couple of constraints follow:
- QWERTY (ANSI or ISO) or AZERTY layout with lettering
- not too loud
- preferably full layout (so no tenkeyless)
- transportable/compact: I'll most likely have to take this with me to work and back home every day.

Other constraints:

- Because the standard right CTRL key is far from an easy reach and because I can't use any registery remappings, I also need the right CLTR key to be closer to the spacebar. At least at the location of the Application key.
- It should be available in the EU. Apparently customs is a nightmare in Belgium.
- At least one windows key.

I'm flexible in the type of switch but prefer something along the lines of cherry browns.

I guess I should be looking at Cherry boards?

All Filcos do have the right CTRL too far away though.
This constraint really narrows down my possibilities but it's one I don't want to compromise on. It's funny how you almost can't find a rubber dome without the layout that I want, but mechanical keyboards all hold on to this (IMO) crappy right CTRL location which would be better suited for a less used key.

I'd recommend the Cherry 1800 layout. But...finding them with an MX switch is a bit difficult (i.e. if you find one, let me know, I want one). It's definitely my favourite layout (though my current Model F layout comes close with the left hand Function keys and the close to backspace Esc).
Don't go for the MY switches (G81) unless you know what you're getting yourself into.

Kiibohd

ALWAYS looking for cool and interesting switches
I take requests for making keyboard converters (i.e. *old keyboard* to USB).

depends if you care about the not too loud bit.

These sound like the horses of the apocolypse charging when typing

Not a bad thing by the way, quite satisfying in fact
