Any gut wrenching filth shots to look at?
« on: Mon, 24 May 2010, 16:03:21 »
I was just wondering if anyone has any filthy photos to share before they cleaned out their found board. The usual food stuffs and leprechaun poop. Before and after stuff mostly. I'm kind of sad I didn't take before shots of any of my boards, I had to debug a few (really dead bugs inside) and also take out quite a bit of brown stuff and hair.

Any horror shots from members here?

I'm still debating whether getting this thing clean is worth 99% risk of skin cancer from even touching the filth for more than ten seconds.

I know where I can ask for some serious filth shots. If I can get them, I'll post back.

Horrifying things (such as a mass of red ants crawling out of the keyboard).

EDIT: More to come, hopefully. Begging for the really bad pics.

Ripster, I just like seeing people taking on the odds and cleaning up something that is trash bound. Amazing what you can do with some effort.

I think a LOT of Ebay POS keyboards come from dry cleaners.

Not so sure. I have two boards, bought independently, which most likely came from doctors' practices (they have health insurance card readers). Both had that sort of dense felt carpet. Outside they were squeaky clean of course.

Lets just say that I have found things in keyboards that I don't ever want to even think about again let alone mention it or post pics of it. I would have felt very privileged if some of my boards were even twice as nasty as the ones posted so far.  =S not ok! ewwwwwwwwwwwww! Get outta my mind!!!

I opened up a model M to clean it once and the filth was astounding and frightening. Hair, crumbs and unidentifiable bio-cheez. In my efforts to clean that one, I somehow rendered it unusable.

Just as well, probably...

You call those dirty?  You should have seen the terminal keyboard I *Started* cleaning out last week.  It was so dirty, I could not depress the keys.  So far, I've pulled out 28 staples, 2 rubber bands, spider webs, and several silverfish *shudder*.  WHY WOULD ANYONE SHOVE STAPLES UNDER THEIR KEYS???
Notable Switches I have tried:
black cherry, blue cherry, brown cherry, clear cherry, cherry M84, white alps, black alps, cream alps, Monterey blue alps, Fujitsu Peerless, Gateway2000 rubber dome, Keytronic rubber dome, Model M buckling spring, Model F buckling spring, futaba, black space invader

Well I don't have pics, but two recent purchases were so nasty, I threw them in the garbage. One just had some unidentified crusty stuff all over the keycaps and underneath like someone vomited on it. Tossed in the garbage without touching it any further. The other one had a mud dobber's nest in the cavity where one of the feet should have been. I tossed it outside so it wouldn't hatch in my house. I may harvest the keycaps because they're doubleshots, but it's headed for the landfill.

Absolutely done with used keyboards. Maybe an AEKII for the dampened sliders, otherwise no more used keyboards for me. You all can have them.

Pass em my way!
A pair of marigolds, a few hours and I'll give a clean board every time.

retr0bright works well too, I currently have an AST that is so yellow it's scary. It's a dome, but I bought it just to do some retr0bright/toothpaste/oxy cleaner comparison pictures. All I need to do is get the ingredients without getting arrested for having a penchant for 72 virgins.

And you're proud of this?

My horror stories are other people's junk, I don't use them, and I consider them garbage and may not even harvest any parts before I dispose of them.

Actually, I only have 3 used keyboards I would ever use: MiniTouch with Monterey switches, another used MiniTouch that I cleaned thoroughly, and an M2 which I would clean thoroughly before using.

Edit: make that 4 used keyboards - forgot the Omnikey which I cleaned and use on occasion.

It's just.... What? I'm not actually sure what that would look like. I know the face it would inspire, though:

As horrific as that image may be, the thought of the conception is infinitely worse.

I've been lucky with the used boards I've bought, they've been pretty clean. I did leave one for a week before cleaning it though - most germs die within a few days of not having a host, so leaving it untouched for a week was my insurance policy. (It wasn't that bad, just a bit grubby.)
