Should I try Filco Cherry Brown after Topre?
« on: Tue, 25 May 2010, 15:19:02 »
Just read few topics here and got some opinion that Cherry Browns can be better for me, at least seems it's good variant to try? Anyone have so experience who tried Browns after topre and became more happy with it?:)

I have both.  I like Cherry browns better. I had Cherry browns first, though, if that's an issue. At any rate, I think they are worth a try.

I tried cherry browns first, I like them.  I then tried topres, I liked them but not as much as cherry browns, I eventually sold my topre boards.

My daily work keyboard is a saw-ed off compaq mx 11800 (check my sig).

If you hang around geekhack enough you will eventually feel the need to try topre switches, for what it's worth.
My keyboards: Filco Cherry Blue Tenkeyless(daily home), Compaq MX11800 (modded to blacks), Compaq "MX 84u",  Wellington\'s Dampened Endurapro, Pinkalicious Filco Blue Cherry, Chicony KB-5191, Chicony KB-5181, Desko MOS 5023 UP "elbowglue" spos (modded to blues), Siig Minitouch (monterey blue), SMK-88 (blue cherries), Ricercar SPOS
Smallest to biggest keyboards in inches (Length X Height) - Length is most important for a midline mouse position

I like Cherry browns better than Topre capacitive switches.  But I like my HHKB layout better than anything else (which makes it my favorite keyboard).

Both are nice.  I say, try anything you can get your hands on...finances permitting, that is.  :)

could anyone say it's the only Tenkeyless Filco Brown model? - http://www.keyboardco.com/keyboard_details.asp?PRODUCT=624 - so it's the same what elitekeyboard sell?

also what is doubleshot? is this feature included in the keyboard on the link above?

Why would you?  IMO, Topre key switch boards are the best modern keyboards available.  The velvety smooth typing experience of a Realforce is refined and pleasant compared to say a Brown Cherry Filco.  Maybe some of the Cherry keyboards with PCB mounted key switches provide a softer experience than the plate mounted Filcos.  I wouldn't know.

Don't get me wrong, Cherry MX Brown key switches are OK, better than some of the other current production switches (i.e. "Fukkas"), but I find them relatively harsh compared to the Topres and boring compared to clicky buckling spring keyboards.

I will never understand the pleasure some people find in training themselves to find the actuation point of the Brown Cherries so they can avoid bottoming out the keystrokes.  I just enjoy banging the hell...out of my keyboards  :)

Of course, some geekhackers who have experience using a wide variety of different keyboards absolutely hate the Topre boards.  I guess it ultimately comes down to personal preference... and how much coin you want to lay out.

Try 'em both.  You will have no trouble selling the keyboard you don't like. :)

Here is why I prefer Cherry browns over Topres:

-Vs. my HHKB, they're a little lighter.  The same can't be said for other Topre 'boards; however.

-Because of the resistance increase after the tactile point, the Cherry browns are "bouncier" than the Topres.  On the Topres, I have to actively raise my finger.  With the Cherry browns, I can just stop pressing down, and the spring helps lift my fingers up.  This results in less fatigue.

Like iMav, I use my HHKB because the HHKB layout > *.

thats kind of funny. The cherry browns are 'smooth',  until you try out a Topre. I think the Topre keyswitches are electraglide smooth. The rubber dome / spring combination makes for a unique typing experience. I like the browns though, but they are no where as smooth as the Topre.
