[IC] Asheville NC Meetup (POSTPONED)
« on: Sun, 11 August 2019, 16:19:56 »
Hello all!

I am gathering interest on a possible meet up for Asheville NC.

Reasons for Ashville: The mountain scenery there is very beautiful, it's not too far from the surrounding cities from other states such as Atlanta, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Greenville, Spartanburg.

UPDATE: Meetup will be held on 3/21/20 @ 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM EST

If you're planning to attent then please fill this out: Registration Form

Here is a link to my Discord, where I have made a channel for the event labeled "nc-meetup"

Thank you for your time, let's show East coat some keeb love!

Hell yeah! I'm in Charlotte, so this would be perfect. Asheville is a cool place, and if you are into craft brews, there are literally a million craft breweries there.

Yeah, I'm hoping this goes well and it just so happens I do like crafts!

Expressing interest. I'm in the Shelby area so this would be a pretty easy drive for me, and Asheville is familiar enough with as much as I was there in 2016 for med stuff :P. Also had to say November since there was no October choice in the IC form.

Some updates for the meetup.

We now have a few sponsors for the event!

-Dixiemech
-CannonKeys
-TheKeyCompany

These 3 vendors will be showing their support by providing various things to giveaway at the event. I myself will also be giving some cool things away  ;D

No updates yet on a venue yet but will be getting that soon. As for the polls currently, the winning months are November & March. Expect the event to be held on a Saturday in one of these months. I realize this is a fairly large time gap, but I am waiting to see how the polls may change over the next week or so.

More updates soon  :thumb:

Very excited for this! I'm just down in Greenville, so this is perfect! Do you have a venue yet?

Edit: the company I work for has offices in Biltmore Park. Depending on the number of people attending, I can offer the use of our meeting space if you don’t already have something else lined up.

That's would be pretty cool! I am currently looking into a venue but if it doesn't pan out then this could be great.

Unless things get worse in the next week or the venue says otherwise then yes it's still on!

I just got a call from the venue and we will have to postpone the meetup for a few months. Sorry for those who were looking forward to this but we will still hold the event, it will just be after this whole Corona scare is over and the venue lets us hold it!

I'm going to bump this because I love Asheville and am still hoping, as unlikely as it may be, to be able to make the rescheduled event!

I don't usually keep up with these things, but since I recently moved to Knoxville I might try to take a scenic drive over there.

Were our leaders just stupid? Well, maybe. But there’s a deeper explanation of the profoundly self-destructive behavior of Trump and his allies: They were all members of America’s cult of selfishness. You see, the modern US right is committed to the proposition that greed is good, that we’re all better off when individuals engage in the untrammeled pursuit of self-interest. In their vision, unrestricted profit maximization by businesses and unregulated consumer choice is the recipe for a good society.
Support for this proposition is, if anything, more emotional than intellectual. I’ve long been struck by the intensity of right-wing anger against relatively trivial regulations, like bans on phosphates in detergent and efficiency standards for light bulbs. It’s the principle of the thing: Many on the right are enraged at any suggestion that their actions should take other people’s welfare into account. This rage is sometimes portrayed as love of freedom. But people who insist on the right to pollute are notably unbothered by, say, federal agents tear-gassing peaceful protesters. What they call “freedom” is actually absence of responsibility.
Rational policy in a pandemic, however, is all about taking responsibility. The main reason you shouldn’t go to a bar and should wear a mask isn’t self-protection, although that’s part of it; the point is that congregating in noisy, crowded spaces or exhaling droplets into shared air puts others at risk. And that’s the kind of thing America’s right just hates, hates to hear. Anger at any suggestion of social responsibility also helps explain the looming fiscal catastrophe.  – Paul Krugman 2020-07-28 NYT

Knoxville, eh?!  How are you liking it?  I've loved it there every time I visited, absolutely gorgeous scenery.  :)

I was born and raised in Tennessee, and lived in Knoxville in the 1980s-1990s. Most of my family and friends are here. This is home to me.

I would be down for a weekend trip up to Ashville, could also see if any of my family happen to be in the area if they're not in Charlotte.

Bump from another new user AND another Knoxville guy wanting to find a excuse to come to my favorite home away from home, Asheville.

My family and I are there every few months anyway (well, we are when things are a little less crazy) so barring a work catastrophe I am totally in for this !
