Alps Build or Buy Alps Keyboard?
« on: Thu, 29 August 2019, 13:06:37 »
I am looking to get an alps keyboard with good linear switches, but i don't know where to start. I know some of their switches are better then others, but i'm wondering what would be best for a gaming keyboard. Linearizing  SKCM Series also counts.

The best a modded Filco Zero with linear alps switches has 18 key roll over with a PS2 converter. Other then that i think its the DELL AT101 or AEK II since those are readily available.

Modern builds tend to make Alps sound like arse. Also don't buy loose switches unless NOS.

Personally, I don't like that sound very much tbh. It's too muted; Alps are musical, and should sing! Don't muzzle them with lubricant, or tiny cases they can't reverb in.

Also, don't take all online typing demos for granted. Not accusing him of changing the sound, but I've heard some on YT do. Personally, I NEVER alter the sound other than adjusting gain and microphone position.

I cannot agree more with this and I feel that the sound ideal for modern boards is just wrong. But so is the size ideal (which is related, after all).

Probably the most economic choice right now is a KBParadise V60 with Matias linear switches (not SKCM, but still close enough), or maybe go further by swapping them out with other SKCM/SKCL, since I think NOS SKCL Yellow is still available on Taobao and getting more common SKCM/SKCL switches isn't too expansive/hard and you can just linearize them. Or maybe a XD60 or AEK64 built for more flexibility, though it is more troublesome this way.

Alternatively, you can go for the more common vintage chassis like AT101 or Focus FK-2001, though finding one in good condition and reasonably priced is pretty hard nowadays, since price fluctuates a lot, you'll need to pay close attention on mechmarket or eBay.
