[IC] Dawn (75% Isolation Mount)

Dawn (75% Isolation Mount)

This board has been in the works for quite a long time, as I've always wanted to design a 75% keyboard. I'm excited to finally be able to post the interest check and get feedback from the community that can hopefully lead to a successful group buy.
If you're interested in the design, read through the interest check, take the survey, and leave some feedback with your opinion and what you want to see in the group buy!

Interest Check Survey: https://forms.gle/17kbC3uWWnvPawC49

Official Discord Channel: https://discord.gg/HXZsgum

Update 3/26

There will be a second prototype made before we go to GB just to fix the tightness of the back accent on the first prototype. I haven't had a chance to build the first prototype yet, but the revisions will be based on feedback from Salvun and MyKeyboard. Hopefully I can build the first prototype soon and post a typing test and a build log. I will update again with more prototype pictures and a timeline once the revised prototype is going to begin production.

Update 2/7

The prototype is just about finished, the accents just need clear cerakote to protect the sandblasted brass and hopefully I will be able to build it and post some pictures in a couple of weeks. After that we will hopefully have a price and raffle date to announce as soon as the functionality of the prototype is confirmed! If you're not already in the discord server, go ahead and join as that is the best way to stay up to date! Here are some of the pictures Salvun took of the unbuilt prototype:

More
Update 1/8

Salvun has finished machining the aluminum sections of the prototype and it has been sent to be anodized. As soon as that's back the accent and weight can be machined and checked for proper fit. Then the prototype can be shipped out and I can build it and post some finished pictures. After that, there will be information regarding the Founder's Edition raffle!

A complete album of raw machined prototype pictures can be found at https://m.imgur.com/a/FpPK1Pb. Here are some of my favorite pictures:

Update 12/10

Still waiting on the materials to arrive for prototype production, but in the meantime I've created a quick survey to figure out the features/price range combination that would be best for the matching numpad design. Feel free to fill out the survey and share your opinion!

Numpad Survey:
https://forms.gle/8j5s9N5RYYF3MvyMA

Update 12/4

The materials for the prototypes have been ordered, and Salvun will start the manufacturing some time in the next 1 to 2 weeks. We will post pictures of the prototype progress, likely on the official discord as well as Salvun's Instagram.

Update 9/21

The current plan is for Salvun to handle the manufacturing; we are waiting for some new capabilities before manufacturing the prototype, which should be produced late October/early November. Once the prototype is finished, we will proceed to the GB. We will try to make the process as quick as possible, but the priority is ensure the best possible production quality for the boards. If you want to check out some of Salvun's work, head over to his Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/salvun/?hl=en. We also have a US proxy lined up pending the prototype turns out well.

I wanted the board design to have a very clean exterior with a relatively simple aesthetic. Inevitably, there are only so many ways to design a rectangle, and the simple aesthetic I've chosen may be considered boring or uninspired by some of you guys, but that's okay since everyone is entitled to an opinion. As such, some of the design choices I made were:
  • No visible case side seam
  • Rear angle screws hidden by brass accent
  • Staggered, symmetrical F-row
  • Symmetrical 0.75u blockers for WKL case (inspired by Dixie Mech Bauer)

After original plans to design a board with an adaptable mounting system, I decided to go for a more straightforward approach on my first design. My goal was for the design to implement an isolation (or gasket) mount system, and riotonthebay was kind enough to allow me to use the same exact gasket strips that Keycult used on the No 1/60 and 1/65 as well as the No 2. I figured this was the best option for me as a designer, to use a tried and true material, as well as for the consumer, as they would know more or less what to expect from the mounting system. Again, huge thanks to riotonthebay and his partner!

Specifications
  • 7 degree typing angle
  • 7.5 mm high profile walls
  • 12 PORON isolation mounting strips
  • M2.5 mounting screws
  • CNC milled aluminum case
  • Brass or copper accent and internal weight for Standard or Founder's edition respectively
  • Approximately ~2-2.5 kg depending on weight, accent, and plate material
  • QMK (VIA planned) compatible PCB designed by PheonixStarr
  • ai03 USB-C Unified Daughterboard

Layouts

These are the final layouts for the Winkeyless (WKL) and Winkey (WK) plates. The PCB officially supports ISO, and an ISO plate file will be offered along with the other open sourced plate files once the GB concludes.

Winkeyless (WKL):

Winkey (WK):

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the keyboard named Dawn?
I had originally planned a theme for the aesthetic of the board, but over the course of the design I ended up on this simple aesthetic. Despite the change, I liked the name so it stuck.

What's that keyset in the first picture?
This is another project I've been working on and may consider running if there is interest. I know there have been many blue or purple designs recently, but this particular set was inspired by Sasuke from Naruto Shippuden. If licensing wasn't an issue, I would run this set with corresponding novelties. Literally just an experiment, may or may not ever happen but I liked how the renders looked.

Will polycarbonate (PC) be a case option?
Very unlikely. I'm not a fan of polycarbonate as a case material, both for manufacturing difficulty and durability concerns. However, polycarbonate could be a plate material if enough interest is shown.

Will the plate files be open sourced?
Yes, once the group buy (GB) is complete, the plate files will be open sourced. That way, you can make the plate in any alternate material that isn't offered or make whatever modifications you want.

Will ISO support be available?
Unless there is a large demand for ISO layouts according to the survey, ISO plates are unlikely; however, this will also depend on the vendor and MOQs for cost reasons. Regardless, once the group buy is complete, an ISO plate file can be provided with the open sourced plates.

Will there be a hotswap PCB?
No, the only option will be a standard PCB for which you have to solder the switches. If you still want hotswap support, I've heard that mill max sockets are a decent option for adding it. Unfortunately, built-in hotswap sockets complicate the PCB design and they don't really align with the goal of this board, since I'm told they aren't the most durable.

Thanks for the kind words and support! Glad you guys like the design! Hopefully a prototype will be coming soon.

Nice Bauer bottom row... but no credit seems ummm... something

Although this was in jest, I went ahead and added a tribute to Dixie Mech's Bauer as inspiration for the symmetrical 0.75u WKL blocker out of respect for Dixie.

This is exactly the 75% layout I have always been looking for. It has all of the right design elements: separated, symmetrical, blocked F row as well as the nicely symmetrical blocked bottom row. Yes please. I hope someone picks this up and makes this a reality. Looking forward to seeing more progress on this. Nice work and good luck!

IC Filled. Fingers crossed for Dark Navy.
Question: What are the things that would drive down the cost of production for this board? MOQ? One layout for all?
Thanks!

The colors are listed in the interest check survey, where you can list your top color choices. The colors that seem to have the most interest will likely have renders made for them and then they would be offered in the group buy. Production cost would definitely be driven most by higher order quantity. I doubt one layout would work, as both WK and WKL have strong support. Sandblasted brass would also likely be a bit cheaper than PVD, so we will see about what everyone is interested in. The best case scenario is just to generate lots of interest in the board so we can do a higher quantity and minimize the cost.

Really like this design and the renders are well done  :thumb:

Thanks! the renders were made by PheonixStarr, with the exception of a couple that I made myself last minute, and they turned out really well!

looks like the Bauer and the Polaris had a baby that grew to be bigger than the two of them!  That's not a bad thing, either.  Nice looking board.

That is quite an interesting but fairly accurate description. The blockers were inspired by the Bauer, and it's funny that the Polaris had a vaguely similar design, although by the time it was released my design had already been finalized.

Looking good! I think this is going to be really popular with the people who don't like branding on their keyboards. Although some kind of engraving or design of dawn or something on the back might make this board stand out against other 75%s.

Hey Mr Petrov, I recognize you from Top Clack! Unfortunately, like you said, the case layout is pretty set, only the plate layouts are likely to change according to feedback, but thanks for the feedback!

That's an interesting suggestion, I'll see if lots of other people request back engravings. I am considering a limited edition version with a certain back weight design I had in mind; however, I don't want to get ahead of myself as I've just barely started the IC phase and want to prototype the standard edition first. I'll have to see what feedback and demand looks like first.

This looks great. A bit simple, but I do enjoy the back view.

Probably a long shot, but: Any chance of split spacebars? Maybe 2.25 + 1.25 + 2.75 (6.25) so that they'd fit inside the Winkey spacebar and you don't have to change any mod keys. You wouldn't even need to change the plate.

Split spacebar is certainly not out of the question if it doesn't interfere with the existing layouts and there is decent support for it, than I don't see why I couldn't include it.

Unless there is high demand for a hotswap PCB, then it isn't super likely, but we will see what the community is most interested in. If no hotswap PCB is released, the best option might be to solder some sockets onto the PCB to make your own.

Hopefully the price sits in my confort zone after shipping :P I really like the WK version!

I definitely hope the price is within a comfortable range for everyone that wants to get one, just depends on vendors and quantities! I should have WK renders not too long from now :)

Can someone tell me more about the differences between a tray mount and an isolation mount?  I understand the mechanics of the mounting itself, I'm more interested in what it feels like to actually type on.
I've read a little bit about gasket mounted boards, but I don't know what to expect in terms of the feel of the board other than a generally "softer" feel compared to the "hard points" of a tray mount.  I'd likely be using tactile switches (Zealios/Zilents), if that makes a difference.  Thanks!

This is the nicest looking in the recent string of 75% IC's, definitely interested. Hope you manage to keep the price down in the lower end of the range. :)

ISO plates are unlikely; however, this will also depend on the vendor and MOQs. Regardless, once the group buy is complete, the plates will be open sourced and an ISO plate file can be provided.

Does this mean the PCB will definitely support ISO layout, but I might need to get a custom plate cut to build an ISO board?

This board looks like... a thick SLAB of aluminium with keys on top. I absolutely love how clean this is. It really appeals to my inner minimalist.

Now here's the problem - I'm still waiting on gok101's 7V and that keyboard is an absolute stunner for completely different reasons. Getting both Dawn and 7V will be a financial struggle and if I had to choose one right now, I'd probably go with the 7V (I'm eager to try wilba's leafspring plate and I didn't get a Thermal). So what I'm saying is - if this releases after the 7V and I'll still have some savings I'd definitely try and get the WK version.

You mentioned that you already understand the mechanics, but I will go ahead and explain to the best of my ability for those who may not be familiar:

The tray mount is characterized by stiffness, especially at the mounting points. Because the plate is directly attached at the posts on the tray mount, there is essentially no flex at that point, and bottoming out the switch near those areas can be a little harsh.

Top mount takes those mounting points out from under the plate and moves them to the edges of the plate, which removes the incredibly stiff spots from the typing area. Most of the time the mounting points for top mount are only at the front or back edges of the plate, so those edges have a little less flex than the middle of the plate.

Isolation mount (or gasket mount), as far as what is being used in this board, is similar to top mount, but instead of maybe four to five screw mounting points at the front or back edge of the plate, there are three tabs that are only in contact with PORON vibration damping pads. Similar to top mount, this mounting system will have a little less flex at the front and back edge of the plate, with slightly more flex in the middle. But since the plate is not in direct contact with the case, vibration will be transmitted differently. When you bottom out the switch, the PORON will damp some of the vibrations, and the bottom out will feel slightly 'cushioned' for lack of a better word, and the sound will be slightly muted. I recommend watching a review/comparison video of the Keycult No 1/65, as I have used the same isolation material as that board, courtesy of Keycult.

Now in regard to tactile switches, the general consensus is that slightly softer plates/mounting is more comfortable to type on for long periods of time, although there is always individual preference so someone can correct me if I'm wrong. With tactile switches as you press past the bump, it can be uncomfortable to accelerate down as the resistance force decreases and bottom out into a tray mount post with zero flex. The isolation mount should give the best performance for this as the mounting is at the edges of the plate, and the PORON provides some compression and flex.

Looking good, i'd get one with an ISO plate.

This is the nicest looking in the recent string of 75% IC's, definitely interested. Hope you manage to keep the price down in the lower end of the range. :)

Does this mean the PCB will definitely support ISO layout, but I might need to get a custom plate cut to build an ISO board?

I will check with the person designing the PCB before confirming, but the goal would be to have the PCB support ISO layouts as long as it doesn't compromise the other layouts. If there's enough interest in ISO, it's possible an ISO plate could be offered in only the most popular material (so we don't have too low of quantities). This is speculation at this point, however, and I will try to keep you guys updated as things go forward.

Looking great! Can't wait to see more!  :thumb:

Thanks Robotical, that means a lot! I hope everything with the Knight75 turns out well!

this looks great and I am crossing my fingers hard I get my hands on this. GL!

Thanks for the support! My goal would be to run the GB with no quantity limit, but it's too early to tell how much interest there would be, as well as what restrictions on quantity a vendor would be comfortable with.

Very clean! Interested for sure.

For reference, what sized space bar are you rendering with?

The WKL layout has a 7u spacebar.

The win key blockers are not symmetrical. Nice try though.

They're as symmetrical as can be with a 75% layout, but you're technically right haha

Would you consider running it with KBDfans to lower the cost and increase numbers?

I'll try my best to keep the board somewhat of a "budget option" (at least in reference to our hobby) and try my best to not limit the quantity as is reasonably possible!   :)

No, the most important thing to me is delivering a premium product, and I have nothing against KBDfans or their board quality, but it just doesn't align with my priorities.

Yes that is the goal, but if the demand for the board is higher than previously anticipated, the quantity might be limited so that the vendor doesn't have to deal with too large of a quantity of orders. The last thing I want is to get over ambitious and have a GB with manufacturing, QC, and shipping delays.

I haven't finished the number pad yet, but when I do I will make a render. I put the option in the survey to gauge interest to see if it was worth designing, and there was enough interest that I'm about to start. I know I like it when I have stuff with matching aesthetics.

Usually, I do not mind inconspicuous logos and possibly extra branding, but seeing how this can get very personal, I think it might be best to do without on the exterior.
I think it'll add to the very clean look. If you are considering it, I think it on the inside weight would be nice- Like SINGA.

Consider how the IC for NR65's (A beautiful board) go out of hand because of the Logo was not everyone's cup of tea and the designer ultimately settled for something that is too similar to another brand, although other options are available or without. But just saying, it's something that could be avoided.

Interested in ISO. I think that Function keys should have standard spacing, not a spacing based on aesthetics.

I don't like big bezels because my left hand usually rests right in the corner. G80 like cases - and this one too - are painful to me.

First I want to state that I will definitely not add any branding on the top surface. I briefly considered a tiny subtle engraved logo on the middle of the back of the top case, but I've since steered away from that idea.
For the Founder's Edition, I was considering two possible options:
  • Bottom case out of a different/premium material rather than aluminum - this is a more likely option, unless quotes show that it would be prohibitively expensive
  • Small weight design protruding from the bottom of the case, I had something in mind and I'm curious how it would turn out in a render, but unless it turned out really well and the community liked the render, it's not as likely

I like the idea of a more premium case bottom. I look forward to seeing your design for the small weight.

Edit - Carbon fiber looks awesome. just throwing that out there.  A question did just come to me though. Is there going to be any foam cutouts included or as an option?

As already stated - same same ;)

I've updated the FAQ to reflect this, but unfortunately hotswap is probably not going to be an option. If it's really important, then I would recommend soldering in mill max sockets, as I'm told this is a decent option. But I, and the PCB designer, really want to stick with a standard PCB with soldered switches for assembly.

I think overall, this is the cleanest looking board designed this year. I can't get over how nice it looks from every angle. No logo/branding is definitely the way to go here.

It would be a dilemma for me to choose between silver and space gray if those 2 colors end up being produced. In my experience, silver is hard to get right and ends up looking cheap for many aluminum products. But if it's properly done and ends up matching those renders, I think it would be impossibly difficult to pass on it.

There are a few other upcoming boards that I've heavily considered, but now have decided to forgo in favor of this one. Looking forward to it's progress!

I'm actually working on that. A discord server of some sort will help me to keep people updated more quickly, as well as have a place to pass ideas by people and get faster more consistent feedback.

Great 75%! I love the design. I'm all in if the ISO support will be available.

I'll do my best to make sure ISO is available via some form or fashion. Since I haven't decided on the best option, I'll ask you, which do you think is the better option if ISO plate demand isn't high enough: offer ISO plate files and have people get their own, or offer ISO plate with limited material choices at a slightly higher price? I want to get feedback from users towards which they would prefer.

There are a few other upcoming boards that I've heavily considered, but now have decided to forgo in favor of this one. Looking forward to it's progress!

Thanks for your opinion, I'm really glad you like it! I should have some pictures of anodization samples with color matching available before the GB to help you decide. I'm going to keep the no logo/branding consistent because I like how clean the design looks without, with a possible exception for a founder's edition if I go that route. I'll explain this more in an official update, but I thought a simple and hopefully still clean bottom weight would be a good accent to distinguish the founders edition for those who want the exterior surface to still be clean but still have a little bit of a logo for supporting the project early on. That is open to consideration though, I'm just tossing out ideas.

Alright, I officially created the Discord channel, the link is in the original IC post now, but here is the link! It'll be easier to discuss questions in there!

Looks very good. Personally I'm a fan of 75% keyboards and as someone else mentioned this looks like a 75% version of the Polaris. Which is a good thing!
I will most likely join in if there's an ISO version avail.

I would be perfectly ok with that option. Brass or POM options would be plenty enough. Add files for whoever wants to cut their own plate and that will cover everything.

Just checked again, it is at the bottom:
Quote
Will there be split space support?
No, there are currently no plans for split space support. The benefit is not as noticeable for a 75% layout, and the PCB design has important components under the space bar which would conflict with split space support.

Yeah, I'm sorry I couldn't offer split space support  :(  It's unfortunate but not all features can be implemented. Thanks for the feedback though! If I run future projects I will definitely consider trying to get split space support ahead of time.

Nice work. This is my favorite looking 75% yet. Most of the other ones with staggered F keys leave space for some strange looking branding and is such an eyesore. The symmetry of this is very nice. I mentioned in my survey response that for the given price of $400-500 I'd like more customization options and optimized acoustics. Maybe two versions of the case (with and without bottom blockers) would help accommodate more layouts. I know this is a long shot, but split space option would be fantastic, especially if split into symmetrical parts.

Thanks! So I'm working on the flex and acoustic cuts in the plate right now actually to optimize the acoustics. There will be a WK version with only one 0.5u blocker on the right side to support more bottom layout variations, should have renders soon for that. Split space is currently not going to work on the PCB, but we will try to see if we can rearrange things to make it a possibility for those who want it, I just wouldn't set my expectations on it being available. As for other optimizations for acoustics, most of that will come from the plate material itself. If you have any other questions or more specific suggestions, feel free to join the Discord channel and send me a direct message.

Definitely a chance! From the OP:

However, due to the design choices, brass weight and accent, gasketing strips, and potential PVD brass finishes, it is quite possible that the GB price could end up in the $350-450 price range depending on options.

I think crykn can't share more pricing info until Salvun ships back a prototype.

Yes, as the 9/21 update in the IC says: "We also have a US proxy lined up pending the prototype turns out well."
I'm located in the US, so although MyKeyboard will be the main logistical vendor, there will certainly be a US proxy regardless, the specifics of which proxy just haven't been disclosed yet.

You can't come barging in here making frantic demands and then get upset when people call you out on your actions.  I think you need to take a second to realize that this is an established community with standards and expectations (we don't make demands of others, and we respect each other).  If you continue to take such a brash and offensive tone towards others, the mod team can and will take appropriate action in response.

I think the only way to know what the actual demand is for this board is to open up the group buy for a limited time, say 5-10 minutes.

Then choose to either:

A) Raffle off buyers list for each round of production
B) FCFS off buyers list for each round of production

Ideally, at some point, sooner rather than later, a group buy would be made unlimited to address concerns for market demand.

This alleviates several issues:

1) Everyone that wants a board gets a board.
2) The aftermarket cost is less likely to be driven up by competing buyers who lost out on the buy (i.e. deters filppers)
3) Eliminates need for additional rounds
4) Eliminates waiting lists

I like the idea of a founders edition that adds inconsequential details to the build like an engraving. But I would prefer everyone have the chance for big ticket items such as the copper weight.

Why exclude people for the sake of exclusivity when everyone can benefit the same?

I've been waiting to make an official update until the prototypes have officially begun the production process, which should happen very shortly. Salvun's new machine is just about fully ready and I'm finalizing the weight engraving.

I'd be very interested in PC as a plate material.

New kid on the block itt, hello everyone!

As someone who is looking into more compact designs but retaining high level of functionality, I like it. I also love separation between numbers and F-row, which makes it look way better than those who clump them together IMHO. I also have no use for scrolllock/pause keys (original or otherwise mapped). Basically, it has every thing that I am looking for in my 75%.

Any updates on the US proxy you mentioned? As things are MyKeyboard currently doesn't ship to my country and I'm not really that interested in extra hassle with mail forwarding services because it usually will result in about same shipping price and double the time.

Thanks for your work.

There will be 100% be a US vendor, so don't worry about that. It just hasn't been officially announced which one. All details will be available when the time comes for the founders edition raffles.

There should be a fairly big update in the next week and a half.

like the design overall

but
not sure about the usb port with the brass accent. I think it cheapens the keyboard,
imo
you want the accent to shine alone not to be together with a hole for functional use.

That's a valid opinion, the design won't necessarily appeal to everyone, but I've gotten a lot of positive feedback on the design. Needless to say I quite like it, I think function and form can be mixed and don't necessarily need to be separate.

I can try to attach an image at a future point in time showing how it's mounted, but it's screwed in from the bottom of the case.

do the screws for the accent extend up through to the top housing?

No, they do not. There are two screws for the top housing hidden by the accent itself. Then the  accent is mounted by two screws going through the accent into the bottom housing.

Love the dual WKL bottom row and the separated function row. Makes the 75% look way less cluttered.

They're both roughly the same price right? In the $350-500 range before shipping and fees?

but i hope that Dawn is in that range

I thought the Dawn IC form suggests it’s $400-500? Asking how many boards someone would buy in that price range?

And I thought gok said the 7V would definitely not be $650 and hopefully not $550 or $450, but then he said he didn’t want to fix a price yet because of vendors and manufacturing costs etc?

I originally said between $350 and $450 in the IC post, considering that's a fairly safe range; but in the IC survey I ended up putting $400 to $500 to be safe and to account for the fact that it might be more expensive than the initial range. I don't have the official numbers yet, so stay tuned, but I would say it should definitely be in the $400 to $500 range. I hope that wasn't confusing  :)

I'm just going to be echoing other comments, but wow, this is the best 75% layout I've seen. I've been looking for something like this for a while.

I really appreciate the "no visible seam" goal for the sides as well. The whole design looks wonderfully clean, I'm really excited for the GB. As long as there is some kind of room for ISO support, I'm all in! :)

The PCB supports ISO, but there aren't plans to offer the ISO plate in the GB due to low demand. However, I will release plate files after the GB if you want to get a plate made somewhere.

Prototype has been delivered to OP, it had troubles with accent not fitting correctly. As of now, new CAD schematic is being designed to fix the issue. Raffle/GB TBA after second prototype. Detailed info can be found in Discord.

I don't know how much traction the numpad idea is gaining, but I would be in for one. I don't think I can justify the 75% both because of cost and the number of boards I already own, but I can definitely do a numpad. I don't have a separate numpad at this time and would love a high quality one.

It's gained quite a bit of traction I would say. At the very least I expect to eventually post an IC for one. The survey gives me data on what percentage of people who want Dawn want a numpad as well, but an IC will be helpful in gauging interest from people like yourself, who want a numpad but not Dawn.

I will be working more on the numpad design once I'm confident Dawn is ready for production.

I've been lurking/following this for a while now. Don't know why I didn't say something before but this board is gorgeous. This is the board that I am most excited about period. It has all of my favorite design languages, features, layouts, everything. I am impatiently waiting to buy at least 2 of these when the group buy goes live. Thank you for designing this and I really hope everything goes well for you.
