If you are talking aftermarket, it depends on mods, etc. Do not buy a new one, you can always get them cheaper aftermarket if you wait a bit. Plus, there are a few different models to choose between too.

Typing experience is priceless, but the actual device shouldn't cost over $100, tops. Hasn't been updated in what, 6 years? Plus, it's all plastic. I love mine (bluetooth version) but don't know if I'd buy it all over again at full price.

We have official confirmation from the company that it's coming this year though. Might as well wait it out

To me I would rather go with something sturdier like a Leopold FC660C or RF TKL. I know both of them are larger form factors, but the build quality & materials used to make them are better IMHO. The HHKBs have always been overpriced for what they are. Don't get me wrong a plastic built HHKB is not a bad board in anyway & I'd definitely recommend it pretty highly if it's pricing was lower to reflect the build quality/all plastic build. Unfortunately to me the price is just not worth what you get with HHKBs.

I saw that but it does seem a bit hazy. Here's hoping that it's not a letdown, and also here's hoping that they keep a wired option for the (possible) Pro 3.

Plastic case, no plate, less complicated and simpler to manufacture switching mechanism than MX. I think 60$ should be enough.

The only reason they are that expensive is lower production runs and licensing. The only knock off of similar size with plate and RGB is 129$. If everyone could make them it would be a lot cheaper, just like MX boards.

If you used literally any other switch rather than Topre, you could probably shave a few hundred bucks off the price tag. Topre switches (although I struggle to call them that) are absurdly expensive for some reason. I've never been able to wrap my head around the cost, considering it's just a capacitive conical spring and a rubber dome. Maybe it's more complicated than that, I don't know.
Linears are for linear people. No offense if you use linears.
I prefer tactile switches, I'm reluctantly using the AULA SI-859 and my pronouns are she/her.

I believe the PCBs & MCs are much more complicated & expensive than what is used for any contact based sensing mechanism switch PCB (MX, ALPS, etc.). Also I can't remember for sure, but when I had my 660C open I believe that there was a good bit more SMD parts than you'd find on a MX/ALPS PCB. So I think that is the big factors that cause a more expensive product to produce. Although don't be fooled Topre & PFU still are putting a huge markup on their manufacturing cost per board. I think they could easily chop $50 off the price & still be in the black per board sold.

$500 because that's how much I've saved over the past few years by having ONE keyboard I love and not screwing around with aftermarket key caps and different switches and blah blah blah. Sure, I decorated it with a couple of colored mods and put an excellent PBT space bar on it to ward off the shine, but that's it.

The HHKB ships with awesome, thick PBT key caps and while people love to ***** about it being plastic, the fact is the build quality is incredible and it weighs nothing in my bag. I love the layout, love the compactness of it, love the sound and feel. I pop my key caps off a couple times a year and give them a scrub, vaccuum out any dust, and I'm back in business.

I see myself typing on this thing years down the road -- with the one caveat being that if I should decide to start writing on an iPad or something, I guess I'd be wanting the Bluetooth version instead...
