Keyboard metal sound
« on: Mon, 07 October 2019, 07:01:35 »
My one month old Steelseries apex 7 gateron red got some metal sound on one letter.

It sound something like this:

from 12 seconds.

Would it be stupid to buy 1 o ring just for one key? That would help? On aliexpress/ebay I can find only o rings for chery mx but I have gateron switches. Will they fit without problems? RMA?

O-rings meant for MX Switches should work on Gaterons, given that they're MX clones.
I'd say go ahead. For the record, which metal sound is it? Thrash metal or heavy metal?  :p
Linears are for linear people. No offense if you use linears.
I prefer tactile switches, I'm reluctantly using the AULA SI-859 and my pronouns are she/her.

Is it on the release of the switch? If so, it may be a slightly defective switch.

Yea like in that video, when I press it everything is OK, sound is heard when I release switch. I sent a mail to Steelsereis, does thins thing comes under warranty?

Possibly, depends on where and when you bought it. It's totally fixable yourself too if you can either get a replacement switch or just swap one with another that you don't use often. You would have to solder, though.

I won't open it because I can lose warranty.

Steelseries support told me that this is not normal keyboard behaviour and that I can send it to RMA. Right now I need keyboard for work but I will send it in near future directly where I bought it, on Amazon.

I hear this sound everyday when typing on my Corsair K63 - now considering it only for gaming

This is the normal ping you get with a lot of MX..it doesn't mean the switch is defective...and I wouldn't be surprised if a replacement keyboard has the same problem but on different keys..even more keys...

O-rings can help a little...and the reason why it wouldn't matter that you have Gaterons is because o-rings go onto the keycap..not the switch itself....and unless the switch is completely different, it will operate in exactly the same way...

There are things you can do to help with pings...liners...lube....I think wear actually lessens it as well...Even putting your keyboard on a big pad helps a little...you're essentially trying to reduce the vibration coming off the plate...
