What is your favorite ENTER key?
« on: Mon, 07 June 2010, 15:18:36 »
So far I know of four types of enter keys on keyboards,
The upside down Enter (Not liked by most)
The Rectangle Enter (Most common nowadays)
The tall rectangle (Pretty uncommon)
The backward Enter (Kind of an antiquary)

I would say that my favorite are the square enter keys. For looks however I think I like the backwards enter.
Brown and black are the colors of cowardice. May my springs shake the heavens!

I think I'd really like the double-width vertical enters of the Selectic. I'm used to the US layout now, but backslash is really too far off and (going off topic) I find myself trying to type ~ on the key left of Z quite a lot of the time - the one thing my Euro Apple macbook got right.

My preference is one key high, at least two keys wide.  Ice, chameleon metallics, or doubleshot printed with silliness, like More Sake would be my keyboard enter key of choice.

This should be a poll, but the enter descriptions aren't quite right.  There's varying widths of upside down and rightside up reverse L enter keys.  The way you described the rectangle, makes me think of a doublewide numberpad enter key.

I think the key is actually Lavender. You see, most of us here have learned to puke Lavender. There is no god, but the lavender god... something like that.

Oh God, the terminology fail...

I assume that this is is the ISO one -

And this is the ANSI one -

AT layout I guess -

The tall rectangle (Pretty uncommon)

Selectric? -

The most common one is probably the ISO one due to the amount of countries that use it. I prefer the ANSI one myself.

Around here in the Netherlands, you definitely see the "AT layout" much more than the ISO (which is really rare) and ANSI being by far the most popular in the last decade - except for the macbook's "Euro" keyboard.

I understand that while there is an ISO Dutch layout, US International is the most popular in the Netherlands.

Could be. If this is the supposed ISO dutch keyboard (which doesn't appear to have curly braces at all! - I'm shocked) I definitely see many more boards with the main layout like the Amiga's. That, and the Dutch/UK(?) macbooks.

For myself, among keyboards that I am likely to find for an IBM PC, I prefer the "rectangle" from the 101-key U.S. keyboard (the ANSI layout)...

except that the backwards Enter from the AT layout is slightly better, if the keyboard does not have the Backspace key displaced (i.e. if |\ is to the right of the right-hand Shift key instead of on the left of Backspace)...

and my real favorite, if I could have it, would be an original Selectric styled Enter. But I don't expect to see PC keyboards made that way, as there aren't enough people who share my tastes to create a demand for such a keyboard. The ANSI layout has everything as reachable as in the Selectric layout, and is standard.

It's worse than it looks, I've typed on the white version.

Not only rubber dome, but really, really bad rubber dome. Like every IBM rubber dome I've tried, in fact...just BAD! Unless the SmarTrex counts as "IBM-derived", since it's pretty awesome for a rubber dome.

Jacked up "cursor key column" can really ruin your day when editing without taking your eyes off the screen.

Yeah those are pretty bad rubber domes, I'll admit that much. But I still like them for basic things.

The KB-8923s are good. Those are the ultimate rubber domes.

If you want weird get a Selectric II.  It's like IBM wanted to wean people into a rectangular one.

So that's where Apple got the idea from.

Terminal Emulation Mini?

Sure you don't mean terminal mini? There'd be no point in a "terminal emulation mini" because a mini doesn't have extra F keys with which to use with emulation software...meaning it's either a typical keyboard, or a terminal keyboard (perhaps with controller PCB swapped).

Actually, lots of ASCII terminals had that type of carriage return key, basically equivalent to the AT keyboard Enter key, except that the keyboard was not as wide.

My favorite enter button is on my Razer Imperator. It's one of my two thumb buttons. It makes for a lot of quickly answered confirmation prompts and speedier workflow in design programs like Photoshop. I use it a ton with coding tools too.

Compared to the crisp feel of the 84-key AT keyboard, you're not likely to find another keyboard that provides quite the same level of unapolagetic satisfaction.

I prefer the regular horizontal enter/return key like the one above. I also dig the lightly greyed out ones.

I guess It's because I am used to them or maybe I just don't like it when there is a different enter key shape which leads to other keys changing location to compensate.

ISO reversed L shape here, because there's not many choices around, and it's easy getting used to mash that big key bazooka-style (rather than scalpel-).
