Any HHKB users have an SD card reader that works?
« on: Tue, 29 October 2019, 16:23:05 »
After some searching and using a tool called USBDeview I've found that the HHKB Professional 2 can supply 100 mA of power to it's USB ports. Reading some of the posts show people who have found certain usb drives, bluetooth devices, and even backlit keyboards that work when plugged into the usb ports. I'm curious if anyone is using a usb SD card reader that works with the HHKB or if anyone knows of a SD card reader with low power draw. I have one already but it appears to require 500mA.

Even a gaming mouse or USB hub won't work connected to the ports; the power allotted to them really is insufficient. You'd probably be better off getting a USB hub and connecting the HHKB and reader to it.

If you are a big nerd... you could try finding a motherboard that supplies quick charge, power delivery, or both to power a keyboard in addition to some peripherals, and also communicate at the same time.

I think USB-C, and thunderbolt could someday supply a keyboard capable of more than just n-key rollover / rgb.

Who knows? Most microcontroller-powered keyboards use real cheap hardware based on 45nm tech that was mass produced more than 12 years ago.

Typically low power means low file transfer speeds as well.. :(

Thanks for the reply, this unfortunately makes it a pipe dream as I'd be transferring large amounts of data. I just thought it'd be convenient having the capability to plug an SD card into my keyboard to offload photos rather than having to always get up and reach for my desktop USB ports or having a dedicated card reader hub. Just a laziness / quality of life thing.

What does work with my HHKB is a logitech g305 (the wireless receiver plugs in and works just fine) and my battery bank I use to charge my phone with. It charges pretty slow but it's cool to know that it works.
