WASD V3 or Filco?
« on: Tue, 03 December 2019, 20:08:16 »
Hello, wanted to know which of these had the better build quality, and if they are easy to open, and does anybody have experience buying GMK caps from WASDKeyboards.com? Do they come in their cool boxes?
Keebs: HyperX Alloy FPS (MX Brown) and Drevo Calibur 71

what.

Both have great build quality but I would say the WASD is more versatile as you can easily program different keys to different positions. It also plays happily with macOs (Filco requires 3rd party software).

I've used a filco before with macs and didn't require any 3rd party software, just swapped win and alt in system preferences. What 3rd party software are you referring to?

Karabiner elements.

Pretty sure you won’t get any media keys with Filco in macOS either.

Furthermore with a WASD v3 you can program layers right from the board. Last Filco I tried (couple of years ago so maybe they have changed) has no such feature.

If you use a Mac, given such similar build quality (both great), I don’t know why you would opt for a Filco as it offers nothing over a WASD v3. The WASD meanwhile does so much more.

I'd be surprised if the media keys and all of the other various shortcuts worked out of the box on a Mac with a WASD keyboard, either.  I've had to use Karabiner Elements on every Windows keyboard I used on a Mac if I wanted the F keys to work as all of a Mac's various shortcuts.  I used a Filco on a Mac for quite a while using that program, and also had a couple of Cherry boards, and now a Topre.  If you don't want the F keys to be Mac-like, then you just swap the keys in System Preferences, as Mode noted.

All that aside, I think the two keyboards are pretty much a toss-up.  The WASD doesn't have its lock lights labeled, which bugs me, but does give it a stealthier look.  I kind of like the Filco logo, but the center-exit cable on the Filco keyboard is slightly annoying.

I have 3 WASDs. They work perfect, media keys and all. Want to switch alt and OS key? It’s a single dip switch on v2 or a 20 second program on the board on a v3.

Of course, none of this matters at all if the OP is on Windows!:D ;D ;D

Both are overpriced for their build quality. Build quality is generally a function of price, and Filco/WASD ask a large premium for a build quality that's becoming increasingly common (with far more modernizations/features) on other keyboards for much less.

Yeah agreed. Filco used to be the king back in the day also one of the first that brought out the TKL. I enjoyed the MJ2 and the Zero but they aren't that special anymore in these days. Leopold is the new king with nice stabilizers, key caps and dampening material.

I do agree with this, and between me and my wife we own 4 Filcos.  These days I'd definitely recommend Leopold over those 2.  But if I had to pick one out of the 2 I'd say WASD V3.

I agree with all of you, Leopold is the new king, I think I will go for the WASD, it has the bigger choice of switches and has 67g Zealios V2 as an option, Thanks for all the help.

Recently added a 2nd Filco TKL to my desk (joining a twin and a CODE v2).  Reason for the choice, which may help you:
1. Used ones can sometimes be found for quite reasonable prices.  This one cost me $64 on eBay and is essentially new.
2. Can trivially be made fully programmable with a Pegasus Hoof.
