Some more questions
« on: Sun, 22 December 2019, 05:03:40 »
I had a few more question hopefully someone can help me with.

1. I probably should have asked this earlier, but I pre-ordered the gmk 8008 and I have c3 tangerines on hand, do they still catch and if so, is there anything I can really do about that?

2. Any good case colors to match the gmk 8008? Was looking at kbd19x since they seem to be stocked more frequently than a 1800 layout group buy appears. Not sure if there would be a more fitting color than just black.

3. Will a cheap soldering iron work (like one of this soldering kits available online)? Not sure if it's "worth" getting something like the hakko for $99 for a "one time" job.

Appreciate the help.

Catch? What do you mean by that exactly? You shouldn't have issues with the GMK keycaps. They're like other Gateron switches.

Grey or black should work well for GMK 8008. As well as a blue-grey, as that is one of the colors on GMK 8008.

Finally, any temperature-controllable soldering iron + a 60/40 or 63/37 Tin-lead solder (Kester is the best recommendation) should work for you. Weller sells pretty well-priced soldering irons with a control knob for temperature.

Thanks for the reply.

Regarding the keycaps, there were some posts that said that milky top gaterons have some chance of catching or sticking to gmk sets where as the clear tops didn't (and the tangerines use the milky tops). However, there were also posts of people saying they were able to use gmk keycaps with milky tops, and of course there are builds with taehatypes where he uses gmk keycaps with tangerines and they are fine. Just wanted to double check if the issue was completely resolved.

Here's an example post about the switches and gmk keycaps: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=95099.0
