What a backwards keyboard =P
« on: Tue, 15 June 2010, 19:18:56 »
Get it, get it???? =D

I just found this last night and thought it was a hoot! It seems very interesting but also seems like it would be very difficult to use =S
It's no "Grippity" or is it??? link-http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?t=4867

So if this has been posted here before just tell me and or point it out and I will rectify the situation! LoLz

Here is the link and some pics-
http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/14/back-typing-keyboard-prototype-doesnt-need-a-desk-your-attitud/

And here is that ole Grippity from the older geekhack link-

All in all I think they are creative, but perhaps a bit too out there. The reach seem a little counterintuitive and awkward, doncha think?

Oddly enough though sometimes when I am typing with a tenkeyless board on my lap I hold the keyboard partially up with my left thumb. So maybe I am not one to talk about awkward I guess.

A keyboard of this type would need to preserve the finger positions for touch typists, which these do not do. That is why holding your tenkeyless is not awkward, even though it may sound so.

Hadn't seen this before, so pardon me for being a skeptic, but a few issues I see...

1. It requires your fingers to move perpendicular to the QWERTY patterns they are already accustomed to (is it such an intellectual leap to turn the left and right key arrays by 90 degrees in order to preserve the typing patterns already learned by your brain??), not to mention the practical-joke-placement of the spacebar where only your stubby little pinkies can get at it with a painfully long reach.

2. They'll target the yet to be proven market of people looking for a 2-handed controller/keyboard with tiny buttons and who don't mind paying $1000 for it. (And some people scoff at the price of Topres.).

3. AND they apparently took the time and money to patent it; err some part of this design.

They could've just sent me a check if they wanted to burn money; at least they'd have some nice keyboards to type on while they contrive their next brilliant business plan.

But it looks more awkward than it sounds =P

I agree completely, it even looks completely uncomfortable too!

Piece of advice, Engadget has to fill the InterToobs with prototype content when it can't find anything real.

That explains quite alot!
