[IC] CONSTELLATION 65%
« on: Thu, 23 January 2020, 06:10:08 »
CONSTELLATION by AEBOARDS
www.aeboards.com

The CONSTELLATION started as a conceptual design of a single keyboard case that could offer a granular and personalized assembly experience through multiple mounting methods and unique construction options.

The mounting method (described as how the plate and printed circuit board (PCB) construction is affixed to the case) has always been a focus of discussion, research, and innovation within mechanical keyboard enthusiasts and designer circles.

The CONSTELLATION is designed to offer the freedom to experiment and experience three of the most popular mounting techniques in one board, allowing you to discern what feels and sounds you enjoy most without having too many variables affecting your judgement.

MOUNTING STYLES:

O-Ring Gasket Mount

The ‘O-ring gasket mount’ was originally first seen in some of the very early custom keyboard designs that spawned from the Korean community. As these kits were only made in very small numbers during production, they have become something of a rarity that only very few people have had a chance to experience. Only recently has the O-ring seen a resurgence in popularity, promising unique feel and acoustic attributes. It is believed that the gasket offers unique dampening beneath the plate while also dispersing force through to contact points in the bottom of the case. The O-ring gasket sits between the plate and PCB, and utilises specific PCB cutouts and bottom case standoffs to keep the plate in place. You can install and remove the O-ring by stretching it around the plate and specifically the USB-C port. We recommend that you be gentle while installing this gasket.

Gasketed Sandwich Mount

The ‘sandwich mount’ traditionally involves clamping the plate between the two halves of the case - this typically results in a very sturdy construction that reciprocates with a very clean and distinct sensation on switch bottom out. Although popular, one of the common criticisms is that this bottom out becomes too harsh; the lack of any relief or cushioning results in fatigue from longer periods of typing. By adding a series of gaskets where the plate is clamped, an element of cushioned dampening is added to this mounting style. The result is a fine balance between a typing sensation that feels sturdy and crisp that doesn’t cause as much fatigue as the former over periods of time.  You can try half isolation (where one side, usually bottom, of the plate having this gasket to dampen out the bottom out), or full isolation (both sides of the plate having gaskets). Please be aware of material thicknesses and be vigilant when installing gaskets in both half isolation and full isolation, keeping in mind compression and material density as you decide to install these gaskets. Please ensure you do not have too much gasket thickness and are able to screw the top and bottom pieces of the case together.

Top Plate Mount

Amidst all of the different innovations and designs, top mount has remained one of the tried and trusted mounting designs that many enthusiasts favour due to its consistent feeling and balance between relief and rigidity. The mounting points are placed along the top and bottom perimeter of the plate and screw into the top piece of the case. This allows the plate to flex along its lateral axis giving a nice semi-cushioned bottom out whilst still retaining structural integrity. Top mount was included to act as a control or baseline that builders can use to compare with the O-ring and sandwich mount methods to determine which they enjoy the most.

Right now, we have only made it with our fixed layout. I have intentions to offer more layouts at some point. Note that the plate right now in the prototype doesn't have stepped caps, but we will support it.
If you've got a layout in mind, link it, we'll see what we can do in the future.

Been awhile since I seen a 65 without any blockers.
Really interesting choices with the mounting options. Also like the brass? Spacer separator thing.

Yeah, the accents?
We'll offer different colours accents so you can match up some of your keysets. For example with my prototype in rose gold: https://imgur.com/a/cOlUTqk

If you've got suggestions for accent colours, then free feel to post. I'm going to get some more colours made for prototypes, so ideally ones that match popular keysets with our signature colours - Black, Aegis Navy and Space Gray

We've been working on it during the EXT65 as well. With EXT65 we were trying different gasket materials as well as positive/negative angle style boards.
For this one, we wanted to give a "baseline" feel with top mount, then allow you to add the gaskets to try out what you want to discover, allowing you to limit other variances so you can get a feel for the differences. The prototypes have been pleasant to build and type on, and I hope that our buyers will also enjoy messing around with it.

Sadly no, right now we are running with one fixed layout. Down the track we may support more. It's more of a case of the plate having too much cutouts for ANSI users (our core market). We would have to make sure that there is enough ISO demand for it, which I'm sure there is, but we're taking one step at a time to minimise risk, since I'm going to front my money to buy the units to get them instock (better experience for the buyer imo, and the future of keyboard buys)

Does the brass form that full edge? or is it just an insert?

It's an insert (it's called an accent). Example: https://imgur.com/a/cOlUTqk
We want to offer a range of colours so you can mix and match to your keysets. It's not connected to your plate.

what's the price range?

I'm aiming for 450-550. Trying to get it cheaper as possible, but for a reference, our previous model the EXT65 was 500.

We've had to buy a bunch of extras to make this work. I've gotten a custom rubber feet which will be standardised across our lineup moving forward (paid for moulds and materials for this). It's the same with the gaskets, we've standardising the sizes moving forward (they are slightly different to the EXT65 gaskets). We'll also be including O-rings.

I'm working on packaging now, so final costs will vary based on what decisions we make for this, as well as doing a bit of IC thread reading to check demand. I'm paying for the units and selling it as an instock product, so I want to minimise the risk on my end.

Ah, OK, so it's an accent, wasn't sure if it was meant to also weight the board.

As a Mac user, I just want to say thank you for the 1.25 x 3 bottom row. Phew.

So far, consensus tend to indicate that both "O-Ring Gasket Mount" and "Gasketed Sandwich Mount" allow for a softer and more stable typing feel, to the point that they sometimes all fall under the "gasket" bracket.

Since you offer both choices here, I assume you believe these 2 methods lead to significant-enough results, typing feel and/or sound? Can you elaborate a bit here?

Beautiful board with interesting features.  Love it.  I'm sure I won't get one fast enough yet again.

We're only a small team so even though I'll have 100 units, I'll sell them in manageable waves, similiar to the EXT65 where I had a wave of boards open for US timezone, then one for EU timezone - but they are not region locked. I do think it's easier and 'fairer' this way, as you get a few opportunities to get it. And if there's demand, we could potentially have another run.

Are any of the brass inserts going to be coated or will they all be raw?

These are clear coated, and will not patina. Same finish as the brass plates in the AEGIS and EXT65.

Just to clarify...this won’t be stocked regularly right after that 100 unit for another round or something like a tofu? It’s just those units will be already made and ship shortly?

It really depends on demand. Since I buy the stock first before taking payments, it means my money is tied up in a product with uncertainty to sell. If there's demand then it will make sense to get more stock.

I remembered filling out the friends and family form before.  How would we know if we made it on that list?

Love the innovation.  I am enjoying my EXT65 at the moment while waiting for this.

Yeap, I haven't hit out our friends and family who have supported us with the AEGIS/EXT65 yet - we are still stress testing the prototype making sure we are confident with the board. Thinks are feeling/sounding good, so I hope to get the ball rolling after CNY.

That's entirely preference. The aim for this board was to provide a few options so you could test yourself and have little variances as possible using the same switches, pcb and plate. I've tested both half isolation and oring, and currently running oring with bottom row half isolation and enjoy that.

Really good idea on this, and probably some clever internals to make it work. I'll have to see about price and front height before joining.

Just measured from the table, front height from table is around 21mm.

Wrote this from my CONSTELLATION

I'll chuck up some internal pictures of my rose gold prototype on my instagram today: https://www.instagram.com/aeryxz/

Interesting board. But would like some more exterior pics to show differences that set it apart from a Keycult 1/65 in brass

what purpose does the brass mid piece serve? is it a weight like 1/65 or a plate like kyuu? just curios how it is integrated.

Definitely loving the possible combos and options. A hotswap pcb would turn it truly into jack of all trades board. Do you know if the board will be mill-max compatible?

Great question! I've actually using a type of holtites/millmax in my prototype and I do not recommend it. Due to the flex and gasket styles, you may find that some variations might cause your board to short as the holtites/millmax add extra height the bottom of the pcb. I am still using it, but I have taped the bottom of my PCB to stop the shorting. To iterate once again, I DO NOT recommend using holtites, but it is possible.

Hotswap probs won't be an option, but you could always add them to the pcb yourself i'd assume

Hmm. Yeah. I could def see that. I wonder if you could get around this with the newer modern integrated hotswaps, which have a plastic housing on the bottom. Clearly that'd mean offering two different PCBs or only the hotswap as an option, which I'm sure some wouldn't appreciate. Not saying you should do any of this, just that I'd love to see someone solve the flex hotswap dilemma.

If there's a big market for it, since it's mostly fixed layout, it is possible to make a hotswap board. Right now, since there's already many options like accent pieces, plate types, gaskets etc - having too many options might cause decision paralysis and makes logistics a bit harder for us. If the CONSTELLATION proves to be successful and popular, we will support it with addition bits and pieces in the future. I want to create a sustainable ecosystem for this board so that you can buy parts from us and do some customisation and never feel like you can't get new gaskets or pieces for the board once it's done.

Man. That is the dream! I really support this concept. Revolutionary imo. Most boards are one and done, you grow by buying new boards and selling/shelving old ones. Would be cool to see any ecosystem grow around this one (assuming additional hardware doesn't follow Apple dongle pricing, lol). Sure you can desolder and change caps or switches, but hardware changing the whole feel of the board, count me in! Am hoping that I luck out and get in on this, great work!

Can you explain/provide pics on how you can "choose" to only use one mounting solution per side on a single plate?

Like, if you use an O-ring, won't the top mount and gasket tabs be free to rub against the case?

Eh, you'd be shocked how fast community is growing, with people willing to flash that cash. Tons lining up for the Sat75 extra stock sale, and that'll likely be $500 and go in minutes.

Personally I love the idea of an ecosystem project board. One that's supported into the future. And am willing to pay that difference. I'm sure others see that too.

With all those mounting methods, this a no brainer. Must-buy.
Only thing that I think should be worked out is bottom row.
One question: the spacing between keys is normal spacing? Must just be my eyes, but the pics make it seems slightly different.

Normal spacing. The "artsy"-ness of the photos might be giving you that illusion. We try to never show renders because I believe that it can be misleading on what the final product will be like, whereas prototypes tend to be much closer - but this limits the options of "showing off" the board. I do have some more pictures on my personal instagram, and I should post more actually (thanks for reminding) - username is aeryxz. My prototype is rose gold and I have jamon on it, previously I had SA olivia.

This looks incredible, would love to see cyan as an accent option, would look so good with the upcoming Atlantis keyset.

Thanks for the suggestion, teal/cyan is something I'd also like to provide.

Looking at our previous boards, not many have been flipped/shown on the aftermarket - meaning that people who have bought our boards have enjoyed them enough to keep in their collection. This to me is the value perception of what we do - not the after market price. If things run successfully, I will definitely be interested in manufacturing and selling more boards, with more options. We have even more ideas but have to be realistic on what we can achieve and in what timeframes, but we are only 3 people with small amount of capital, living in an expensive country. We also have other projects in the works, mostly collabs, and will reveal more "news" on that when we are ready.

Is it a bit unfair to compare prices at this point - I wanted to give a ball park figure so people could have an idea. We have still yet to finalise the packaging options, and extras - so that pricepoint is purely for a base kit, which should provide everything for a fantastic baseline experience. Any extras is a nice to have and entirely up to you :) There's a bit more bits and pieces going on with this board, for example our custom rubber feet, which I'd paid a mould for out of pocket, which gets subsidised over more boards being sold - so there's a bit of accounting and logistics involved to offer these options to you. I don't actually mind the GB running process and delivery, but it does take a lot of time, risk assessment and trust that things work out between ourselves, factories and end user. That is why I want to do an instock model for the public, the burden of risk is on us and our belief that we can deliver a product to you. This means that vs. gb pricing, the instock model has a bit of a 'premium' since it is tying up money that could have been used else where. I do think we can hit around the 500$ ball park, for comparison that was the price for the EXT65 which was also instock, and gave gasket kits with several materials and enabled us to create relationships between our factories and getting feedback from our users. I would love to share way more about the process as well, maybe sometime over a podcast or something.

Can you explain/provide pics on how you can "choose" to only use one mounting solution per side on a single plate?

Like, if you use an O-ring, won't the top mount and gasket tabs be free to rub against the case?

The internals of the case have been designed so that it is possible for one, single type of mounting to be engaged without conflicting with the other types. When the plate is top mounted, it does not come into contact with the bottom piece of the case. There is enough clearance so the stand offs for the o ring and the space for the sandwich mounting tabs don’t touch the plate (provided the o ring and gaskets are taken out).

Note: this is a cross section of our model, we have not cut the prototype :)

Red is the o-ring
Blue is the PCB
Yellow parts are brass

Hopefully it shows when the o-ring is in place, the tabs on the plate don’t touch the bottom half

and finally....
People have asked about the brass weight - I haven't taken it out but with my DYI options of measuring weight (my digital scale broke, I may be getting fat), I've hacked together a simple measurement of the board with caps and switches.

*drumroll*

Setting the tare weight (400g)

Total: 2.4kg + 0.4kg = 2.8kg

Sorry for the wall of text. Hope all that is helpful in your decision to support us!

With all those mounting methods, this a no brainer. Must-buy.
Only thing that I think should be worked out is bottom row.
One question: the spacing between keys is normal spacing? Must just be my eyes, but the pics make it seems slightly different.
Haha. I was thinking the same thing. But I think it's just the angle and the super dark keycaps. I'd love to see some rendors or a prototype in some lighter caps.

Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk

Normal spacing. The "artsy"-ness of the photos might be giving you that illusion. We try to never show renders because I believe that it can be misleading on what the final product will be like, whereas prototypes tend to be much closer - but this limits the options of "showing off" the board. I do have some more pictures on my personal instagram, and I should post more actually (thanks for reminding) - username is aeryxz. My prototype is rose gold and I have jamon on it, previously I had SA olivia.

This looks incredible, would love to see cyan as an accent option, would look so good with the upcoming Atlantis keyset.

Thanks for the suggestion, teal/cyan is something I'd also like to provide.

this is going to be like the gskt 00. Complete success. I really want one (REALLY I WANT ONE), but it's so limited i am not going to get one probably, and after the sale people will flip them for 3 times the price.
The limited runs it's the only thing that i hate about the community.

Beautiful board, looks super nice :)

Nah. the Gskt 00 is a budget keyboard.  This won't be as crazy since the price point--deservedly--is going to be much higher.

I mean to be fair $450-$550 isn't that much higher than the gskt-00 (which came out to about $350 with bells and whistles)

I mean, it's $150 more than the GSKT even after maxing out the GSKT.

All great information. Especially that diagram. And thanks for the Instagram reminder. Turns out I was already following you, I just hadn't seen that post yet.

And totally understand on price. I'm disappointed I hadn't found you guys earlier as your previous boards look great and ive been reading up on the reviews. Very solid. Hopefully I can get in on this group buy purely for the opportunity to get it sooner and gaining access to new products in the ecosystem as soon as they're released.

Will this be "in-stock" for the first public sale? Or will this always be "in-stock" on your website (ala a CannonKeys kinda situation with manufacturing rounds)?

Just wondering if I miss out on this round, could I be on the wait list for the next?

Definitely looking to get one. Love the concept of multiple mounting methods, it's like 3 keyboards in 1!
My only concern is availability...judging from recent buys (cough cough GSKT), looks like 100 units for public will sell out in seconds. I understand larger quantity will bring other issues like lead time and QC, but sounds like your concern is lack of initial capital for more units. Perhaps you can open a short GB window, maybe an hour, so people who really want the keyboard and committed to buy will get a unit secured? I have seen this in Chinese GB and seems to work pretty well so I am just suggesting.  :)

Will do an initial round first, if it's proven successful then we'll do another run soon after - we'll try keep it in stock if there's demand.

I will be doing a 'small' gb for friends and family - because there's a level of trust both ways. Doing a public groupbuy would just mean I'd have to do the work for running a gb as usual, whereas doing it small and private means I can just work on the other things without the need of updates/reporting.

Follow this thread or my instagram (@aeryxz, @aeboards) and all the info about dates will be released there. FYI there's going to be a delay across the board because of the CNY/Coronavirus, so some time may slip out for that. But either way, stay tuned and we will release more info and sound tests etc!

Looking to do an”DYI” cut your own case design for it, we will release files and sell pcbs. As for round 2, if there’s demand for it after constellation. Was a great project and layout and would like to do it again.

Any chance there will be ALPS support for the PCB?

I’ve asked for a pcb design for alps and plate but no promises. May well as an add on kit down the track once we have sold some constellations and there’s demand for alps. Would require some testing as well before I feel comfortable selling it.

This looks absolutely gorgeous, worth shifting from ISO to ANSI for, I'm in.

See, this is where I am at as well.  Can I readjust to justify buying?  Not convinced just yet but following in the meantime.
I started with a Sinclair human flesh keyboard in 1980 and it has never stopped.

Def not my first build but could be my last. This is the only board as of late that's really kept my interest outside of some crazy split and southpaw boards.

I do love the southpaw layout. The EXT65 i've been using since release has been stowed away while I test out the constellation.
Didn't get time to do a video this weekend, because I got a puppy!

Grats! Puppies are both awesome, and intense, lol. And I'm sad I missed out on the EXT65. Hopefully with a lucky constellation grab I'll be satisfied!

$450-$550 supposedly, honestly wouldnt be surprised if it was higher because its an in stock item

this is definitely a buy for me because of all the mounting options

I'm just a huge fan of supporting in stock. If it's a widely praised board, and looks as gorgeous as this, I want others to have the opportunity. I don't mind rare one-offs existing. But it feels bad when it's someone's endgame and they're forced to pay twice as much cause they were a month late in finding it.

Again. Totally realize that's just how it is, but in stock is cool.

Eh. I'd argue there's still risk. Just cause it's in stock now doesn't mean it'll be supported or have replacement parts for forever. And it's no guarantee of quality.

Don't think we have to worry about that in this case. But I've backed tons of risky boards this past year. At least thats not a reason for me.

Just wanna note that he plans on having a limited stock. It still sounds like there will be a lot of hype around this board. Which means if it gets popular enough, it’ll be similar to what happened with the Unikorn extras as well as what happened with GSKT. Basically it’s limited FCFS no matter how you look at it. But of course, we aren’t the ones bearing any risk that typically comes hand in hand with GBs (inevitable delays, factories pulling the cash grab and go, etc). I trust that the QC will be tight enough so l that we don’t have to wait 2 years to get a board in our hands.

With that being said, it also means that folks coming in a month late would still not be able to buy this board when however many in stock units sell out.

Yeah. So I guess it's still a FCFS. From what was said it's confusing as to whether it'll be restocked or not. Or just supported in the future, for those who already bought.

How will they know what the interest is like after they run out of the first run? That part kinda confused me (if I remember reading it correctly).

I think this might be one of my next boards. I’m torn between the black and space grey—partially because I’m not sure how that would look just yet.

Could we get renders in the other colors?

Speed of how quick it sells, people messaging about r2 etc. For example, ext65 still gets requested, and because of that, we are doing a revision pcb for ext65, and releasing files to cut your own case. If there's still demand, then a round 2 may happen. Assessing risk is probably the most difficult thing to do as someone who wants to do instock, it takes capital and guts to see it out to the end, with so many moving parts that things that can go wrong. I don't like the gb model because it means that you're playing around with other people's money, and if someone does go wrong, it's harder to control. So far we've been lucky that we haven't had to dip into our own pockets too often, prototyping is expensive and is offset by selling more.

Having said that, we'll be delayed and possible moving to q2 just because of the stuff that's happening in China. Unfortunately that's the way things are at the moment. We will most likely do one more set of prototypes with minor tweaks from our current prototypes.

I dunno. It's so rare to find a 65 without any blockers. I love this just for that.

We think so too! I want to offer blockered styles down the track if there's demand for it.

Can't wait to see all the color options rendered on this board!

Most likely we won't have renders. I'll be doing another round of proto, we're confident on our signature colours, so maybe looking to do something a bit left field like a lilac or something like that. Open to suggestions.

If it's successful and people want it, then yeah - will be restocked. I wish there was better way to keep a production line going of these things, but at the end of the day, we have to make it manageable amount to deliver and maintain QC. We are only 3 people, and don't have access to a warehouse, and rely a lot of friends to help us out when we need it :)

All good about the delay, and the costs of stocking. Board looks amazing. Got plenty of time. And I agree. Having a stocked item ready to go for sale is definitely preferable over a GB. Really looking forward to it (and the EXT65 w/ case files!).

I appreciate your decision to move from a group buy model to an in-stock type model. And thanks for the clarification. I believe that there will most likely be a consistent demand for the product you have to offer since it gives a lot of people the chance to explore multiple mounting options with a single board/plate.

And I still think the plate looks super cool.  :thumb:

Soon!

We are in talks again with our manufacturing people’s so things are starting to move again. We have made a few changes based on our tests over the last months and will do another round of prototyping. This will add a bit of delay as expected but we think it will improve feel and sound and is worth it. It’s all a bit vague but will show you all what we mean when we get the new proto and test it out a bit.

ill get one for sure, any idea on the price?

the black one looks perfect for the gmk hero set but maybe one matching even more could be cool

Looking at 520ish at this point, if everything goes to plan.

Will there be any extra plate materials offered?

We are about to test a 4.5mm brass and polycarb plates. The base kit comes with 1.5mm brass.

Any update for GB Date :)

FNF GB is underway. Looking at Q2 at this point, earlier if we're lucky. Still got some logistics things going on too, so hopefully will sort that stuff out soon.
