LF mx red board upgrade without too much modding
« on: Wed, 05 February 2020, 06:55:34 »
Hey everybody.
I can proudly call myself a noob in the keebworld, using an iKBC F87 with MX Reds and a Tai-Hao key set. I have no clue about modding and prefer not doing too much work myself because of lack of time, but I'd like to upgrade my board to something which not makes me feel like my movement sucks because of a bad feeling on my fingers.

I'd probably like to stick with linear switches which feel smoother than my reds and a little heavier to press because I am bottoming out mine hardly  :-X
I heard about Gateron Yellows or NovelKeys Creams which would fit into that, any opinions on these? Or a different recommendation?
I'd like to stay in between 60% - TKL size
Are GMK keys a big recommendation to upgrade to?

I hope I didn't break any rules with this post, I definitely need some help with this..  :'(

Thanks in advance!

No, you haven't done anything wrong! :)
Both options will be good, Gateron Yellows will sound different from Novelkeys Creams so keep that in mind. The spring on Gateron Yellows is better than the one on Creams. When you say you're "bottoming out hardly", does that mean you aren't bottoming out, or you're bottoming out harshly? I bottom out really hard on my reds.

from what i read if budget is of no concern gateron inks are smoother versions of normal gaterons but then finding a keyboard with them from factory might be a challenge, hot-swap keyboards (GMMK and the sort) allows you to change switches fast and without much hassle and can for some be ordered with quite an assortment of switches.
there are also company providing build services, i know kdbfans does other may as well, and i think some users here do as well.
and as for keycaps, GMK will usually be considered more durable and often there is more options for custom sets, but tai-hao from what i have read are pretty good as well, just have less layout options.
hope this helps

I definitely mean harshly, like bottoming out all the way smashing the keys while maneuver Ingame :D
I should add I'm coming from Germany, so that probably minimizes the possibilities. I'd like to stay below 300 € if possible.
I'm really open minded to any suggestion/recommendation since I don't have any favorable brands or designs.
Cheers!
