Cherry MX Black Silenced w/ shorter travel?
« on: Mon, 13 April 2020, 07:32:36 »
There's a cherry mx speed - but I'm not going to silence them myself. I like the idea of cherry mx black silenced + adding silent rings on the keys... But sometimes when I'm curious about having a slightly shorter key travel. Ideas?
Thanks.

You don't need to add silent rings on MX silents, Since the bottoming out is already silenced by the rubber so is the return. It goes from 4mm to 3.7mm. In the begin its something noticeable but not a deal breaker. My daily driver is a board with MX silent blacks and after a while it just becomes normal.

You want not just shorter travel, but shorter pre-travel?

You could perhaps use QMX clips on your Cherry MX Speed. But the noise reduction will not work as well as damped switches and will not fit all keyboard/keycap combinations. (read more)

Think MX silent blacks + lube = the quietest linear available? Also going to fill the keyboard with foam or something.

I'm not sure. I think our senses basically use the bottoming out feeling to determine how much effort to use when typing as quickly as possible (which is my interest). Of course, not decreasing accuracy is of interest - but I don't think the recognition of a click is quick enough for the body to use to stop pushing down.

I think the shorter travel distance vary from people to people.  For example I used to have a board with box red and it drive me nuts (3.6mm travel as oppose to 4.0mm).  I personally couldn't stand it it just feels weird to me.

However if your interest is shorter travel to type faster.  Have you consider Cherry MX Low Profile switches or the Kailh Low Profile Choc switches?  Though I guess those 2 won't cover the "silent" aspect.
