Hey guys
« on: Fri, 01 May 2020, 10:55:22 »
Hi guys,

My work and pretty much the rest of my time involves typing, and as such, I thought to seek the most refined experience out of this.

For the last 6 months I think I bought the most mainstream gaming keyboards from local stores...and returned them shamelessly. As you might imagine, the only switches I could get my hands on were some cherry variants...and none of them were to my liking. I was hoping that I won’t end up here (scraping every review on the web, comparing force curves, with intentions of assembling my own board).

My hope for the future would be to settle down with only 2 boards :))  (one at work, one home) ... something from the realm of topre (clones), and I’m thinking maybe some zilents.

What I have right now is a NIZ mini84 45g (because the word is that 35g is linear, and many have swapped them out). But the thing is that I find the 45g kinda fatiguing for typing all day, and I would want to try something lighter (so don't throw your 35g away)

Hi MoonBiscuit. Welcome to Geekhack.

My work, and free time, are similar in that regard.

Tactile guy then? Is this based off of comparing MX switches so far? Is it mostly because you don't want to annoy others? Clicky guy myself.

I recently saw a review of a NIZ board, they sound wonderful. It tempts me to get one even though I normally like the roaring mating pings of my Model Fs, etc. There seems to be ... healthy debate over Topre and Topre clones. I would post about it in the Keyboards section and see what ideas you get. We have plenty of Topre enthusiasts, but I'm not among them ... yet anyway.

Yeah, evaluating my typing habits with these boards I came to the conclusion that I really enjoy tactility.

I mainly tried MX: cherry reds, silent reds, browns, blues, razer green, razer orange, and kaihl choc blues.
Browns (and the like) were the worst, at least the others were doing one thing right.
Something like blues, but with a cushioned bottom out, while still having a job and a girlfriend would not be bad.
That's why I've mentioned the Zilents, have not given up on MX, I'm not a Topre believer, nor a hoarder, more like a Pokemon Moses of switches.

The sound was also what got me sold on the NIZ, and in this case it was about return of investment, which I think is there. I like it.
Would require some mods to really love it (and in the end cost as much as the Topres...ironic).
I don't know if there are some forums around here with selling/buying stuff (nothing is ever in stock).

I think of MX as basically only being good enough to bother with for their linears, and there are still a lot better linears out there. MX blues are pretty terrible compared to the best clicky options out there, although I loved them for years myself. MX browns ... well, you seem to have felt those out already.

Coworkers and girlfriend didn't like the clickies so far? Heretics. I'm lucky, nobody at work seems to mind. There's one student who has said that he doesn't like my Model Fs (I'm an IT tech in a school district). I have found that people tend to love the sound of Kailh box jades and Alps SKCM blues, since they're crisp and pleasantly bassy. These days I like to describe typing on MX blues as feeling and sounding like I'm typing on plastic grocery bags.

What the heck do you mean by Pokemon Moses? lol You have to collect them all and lead them away from the dirty rubber dome barbarians, to the promised land?

Boiling water I read it as sounding like, and that sounds like a perfect description to me. Well, if it costs as much as Topre, but ends up feeling and sounding better to you in the end than real Topre, that sounds like a win/win to me.

Here you go: Classifieds

There's also Mechmarket on Reddit.

I was thinking more like having one sample of each essentially different build principle, that I like most.

Thank you for the help.
