Now these are the steps required to take apart your Track Point L40:
1. Put your mouse in trackball mode. If you don't know how to do this, you must not own a Trackpoint L40. Fig. 1.

2. Remove the plastic screw cover with the flathead screwdriver, as shown in Fig. 2 and remove screw with the philipshead screwdriver, as shown in Fig. 3.

3. Now depress the buttons as if you were switching back to mouse mode, and the whole top panel should come right off, along with the left and right click buttons. Result shown in Fig. 4.

4. Now remove the screw placed above the trackball and lift away the "trackball containment piece" (a.k.a that piece of plastic that the screw was holding in.) Remove trackball if needed. See Fig. 5.

6. You can now service your Track Point L40. Fully clean the trackball, blow out all the dust and such, and do whatever necessary to get your mouse back in working condition.
7. Repeat all steps backwards for reassambly.
That is about all you need to know to service your Track Point L40.
NOTE: Sorry about the poor picture quality, I had no camera to use for these pictures, so I had to use my cell phone. I will update them as soon as possible.
