[IC] Beam - 40% affordable ortholinear keyboard & PCB

Hello! I've been excited to announce for a little while now. Introducing 'Beam' a truly affordable 40% ortholinear case & accompanying PCB. This all started out with the desire to release a case that was low cost for anyone to be able to pick up, whether it's your first time adventuring in to a 40% layout or you're a veteran of ortholinear keyboards looking to pick up something new. Whilst this is aiming to be an inexpensive case, I still want to release this to the best possible standard that I can.

Features:
  • Compatability with Planck & NIU style PCB's, interchangeable USB cutout to house different layouts
  • Bottom mounted case
  • Windowed cutouts on the base to let through light, to be made of acrylic/resin
  • 6 degree typing angle
  • 3D printed case
  • PCB also created to accompany the case if desired, lightning matches up with case perfectly
  • Large variation of colourways available, primarily aiming for black, white, yellow & pearlescent purple
  • Price: TBA










To do:
  • Order PCB's for prototyping
  • Have some acrylic cut to compare against transparent resin cutouts
  • Experiment with inserts for the mounting system
  • Order aluminium sheets for testing layouts
  • Take and upload photos of the assembled prototype
  • Order brass & polycarbonate switch plates
  • Order aluminium prototypes of the case in a few different colours
  • Order polycarbonate prototype of the case

I would be very interested in buying this case and pcb. Depending on the price it might be a nice way to try out a 40% layout for newbies like me. I look forward to seeing where this goes.

It is compatible with the Shark PCB :thumb:, I've been printing the prototypes in white so once all assembled and I have some photos you'll have a good idea of how it'll look!

Looking in to this at the moment too :) had lots of interest in supporting 2x2u so this is something I'd like to support going forward

Thank you all for your support so far! I've been overwhelmed with all the positive response for the case & board so far ;D. After reviewing the initial feedback I've had so far, there's a few things I'm looking in to implementing/changing/adding:

Main changes -

  • Splitting the case to different versions, the primary design remaining 3D printed but also exploring aluminium/polycarbonate cases
  • Adding support for 2x2u spacebars on the PCB
  • Adding hotswap as an option for the PCB

Smaller changes/design iterations -

  • Adding a weight to the 3DP case to make the case feel heavier
  • Optional foam to be included with the GB if required
  • Adjusting the case to have a low-profile variation for choc-compatibility

I'll be updating the 'To Do' part of the main post with a few new things that I'm currently waiting on/plan on doing in the short term which include:

  • Ordering brass & polycarbonate switch plates for prototyping
  • Order aluminium prototypes of the case in a few different colours
  • Order polycarbonate prototype of the case

I usually just prefer to lurk rather than post :-[ glad you like it though! Should have some more updates soon, just making some alterations for the aluminium prototype quote and the PCB's should arrive next Tuesday all being well
