Unicomp spacesaver Nkey rollover
« on: Sun, 25 July 2010, 01:51:31 »
"Our keyboards do support modified N-Key rollover as specified by IBM and Microsoft. While they will support some 5/6 key rollovers, they will not support those outside the specifications."

I got this email from Unicomp themselves, I am not sure what they mean by "some 5/6 key rollover"

Does anyone know?

By our terminology, they have 2 key rollover. What they mean is that certain combinations of keys will allow up to 5-6 key rollover, but when rollover is usually quantified, it is in terms of the minimum combination of any keys on the keyboard.

In reality, only very particular types of game will have issues with 2KRO boards, after all, games designers have been designing their games around them for a good 25 years now...

It'll be pretty loud :)

Probably not good if you use games that require num-pad specific keys (likely? I don't play games).

Or if you need some of the more exotic key combos that work in some boards but not in others. That may be less likely, unless you've also got OS-remapped modifier keys - in any case we've figured out that unicomp standard size Ms use a different matrix from the old - 1990s - era IBM ones, and they have different non-working key combos, so you'd have to ask someone who ownes one of these to test a bunch of combos.

Note that the rollover on these boards is restricted by the keyboard matrix, with a minimum of 2 keys and a maximum of ~ 5 working at the same time based only on the physical position of the keys on the board, so it's likely you can just remap the keys in software to some combo that does work if you need to - but that may become annoying if you need a full numpad.

ETA: AFAIK a USB (converter) may/will also reduce maximum rollover compared to native PS2 if you use non-standard modifier keys (like me with CAPSLOCK mapped to CONTROL).

I played a load of games on my Endurapro when I had it. Only had about 2 problems, and they were when I was playing GTA Vice City and was mashing down loads of keys during a car chase. Given that most of the things I was trying to tell the game to do were mutually exclusive, I think we can put that one down to user stupidity instead of keyboard failure :P
