Lurker turned member, and I would like some PCB schematic help
« on: Mon, 30 November 2020, 22:19:19 »
Hey all!

I am not unfamiliar with the community here, I have just been lurking for about six months or so now. Hi.  :)

I decided to post now because the PCB I am designing for myself is confusing my beginner skillset. I started this thing a few days ago, with the layout from KLE below, but I am still attempting to organize the switch matrix before I head into Eagle to form a proper schematic.

I don't know how to add the arrow and 'M' keys I have laid out into the Matrix. It's likely a very obvious fix, but I am still stumped. I think I can group all of the extraneous keys into other matrix columns, but I am still unsure.

Hopefully some of you wonderful people can help, as my brain is pooped after working on this instead of schoolwork.

Thanks, and hello again!

Welcome to geekhack :)

Basically there is no right or wrong way to add those keys, you could group all the keys in a square matrix which would use the fewest pins but would be confusing, you could use 7 U shaped columns doing two phsical columnss each with the arrow/M bit in one, you could add a row to the bottom of the main columns (even if the trace are at the top), or you could add an extra column and an extra row or column with only two keys in it which would use two pins but be really easy to understand (M1,2 and 3 up and right are a column, down and left are either below or in another column.

As it's your first PCB go for whichever sounds the least headache.

I actually never thought of U-shaped Columns, but that seems to be the least confusing way to do this. Thanks  ^-^

Now I just need to figure out how to not get eye-strain while laying out the schematic....time for a nap.
