how do those keyboards worth*?
« on: Tue, 03 August 2010, 21:53:10 »
I was just wondering how do those keyboards worth*:
-Dell AT101W
-IBM Model M
-IBM Model M space saving (M mini should I say*?)

I don't really like buying used stuff, even if it's NIB… you know what I mean
but I have no choice regarding alps switches
for BS, I might buy a unicomp keyboard, but I heard they're not as good as the old Model M

There are a lot of variables to consider when pricing vintage boards, and the price you'll pay on eBay or through a collector will likely be considerably more than what you'll see at a local thrift shop, pawn shop, or a through regular Joe on Craigslist. Location also plays a big role.

Now, with that out of the way... I paid fifty cents for each of my ten AT101Ws at a local computer shop ($5 for 10), and $20 each for my Ms.  My Northgate Omnikey 102 and 101 ran me seventy cents and one dollar (respectively) at local thrift stores.  In total, I've spent a bit over $60 total on all of my keyboards, not including restoration costs or all the gas it took to track them down.

On eBay, I'd say maybe $15-$30 is fair for a standard used AT101W in good condition, and $30-$50 for a run-of-the-mill Model M.

I should mention that I'm a noob, so it's probably best to take any of my advice with a grain of salt.

AT-101s are very common around here in the Netherlands (I think they were the default keyboard Dell sold with their computers for quite a while) and you can get used ones for around 1 euro at thrift shops or between 5 and 15 euros online.

Model M varies; I got mine for free from a friend who had 6 old IBM PCs lying in his attic. Not easy to find in thrift shops, online they go for anything from 5 euros up. I think up to 40 euros is a fair price for one in good working condition considering they are very hard to break and they're easy to clean.

I've NEVER seen a Model M mini for sale over here. I have seen a Model F AT sold for 2.50 euros. Unfortunately, not to me.
Current collection: HHKB Pro 2 black on black, HHKB Pro 2 white/grey blank, [strike]Dell AT101W[/strike] (sold to SirClickAlot), 1992 Model M, Key Tronic Ergoforce KT 2001, BTC 5100 C. Dead boards: MS Natural Elite, MS Natural 4000.

well, first a product comes to market, and then the laws of supply and demand determine how they are worth.

There used to be a time that a NIB Dell AT-101W could be bought for $5. Those days seem to be gone, so I'd say about $20-30.

They're not great keyboards. I wouldn't spend a lot of money on one, even a brand new one.

Maybe I'm giving them too much credit.  I think they were having fun using bad grammar and having jokes with, far more than they were making fun of sam113101.

Too bad. I would have given you mine, but I accidentally lost mine. I left mine connected to a computer in an area where we deploy new computers and get back the old ones. From time to time, we have a recycling company stopping buy to pick up unwanted equipment. Someone gave him my Dell AT101W. Mine was NIB when I bought it for $10 plus $37 shipping. I was not using it regularly. I took to that area because I was spending quite some time there and did not want to type on a bad rubber dome keyboard. If you have tried the new Acer keyboards which look like scissor switch, you'll know what I mean.

Let's try "how much do they typically cost?" or "what is a reasonable price?" to get the kind of answers you're after :D
