I have a black one and from what I understand, the black ones are more rare.

Those are rip-off's. Dell AT101W's are worth only $5-$20.

How can something that is new-in-box be worth A RANGE of prices? The "range of price" is usually reserved for something of unknown or questionable condition.

Also, I think you are underselling the AT101W as much as the OP is overselling (I mean the seller in the OP, not OP him/herself).

I have one, I got NIB for 10 bucks, I consider that a wicked deal, because I would pay up to 30-40(CAD) for one. Why? Because, while it may not be better than my model M or a nice tactile cherry, it is a nicely built board that is bound to last longer than a new dome board, which are USUALLY priced higher than 5 bucks (granted, it is insane to see how low some **** boards can be priced at).

You can buy a decent Model M for $20. Even a second hand Model M is better than a NIB AT101W.

The AT101w's are basically just generic old Dell keyboards from the 90's. There's probably millions of them. $5 seems pretty reasonable for a used one.

how much better? Better to everyone?  (I have both, and re-boxed the dell recently because I do prefer my M ... so I DO agree).
Im not arguing they are worth what the seller is asking, I was just stating that something NEW (as in unused and 100% working) should be worth $X not $X-$Y.
I also think there are other ways to judge worth than comparing to other mechs. Like I said, other people pay $$$ for rubber-domes, and yet a dell AT101W is not worth 30 bucks?

If we can take the experience of just about everyone on Geekhack who has used those two, then yes.

yeah probably. But I DO like my dell, and I can tell you right now, aside from sheer luck, there is nowhere I can get a working model M for 20 bucks (let alone the 10 that I paid for my AT101). Even Kishy (Canadian seller) is selling working model Ms for 30.

You have to take into account availability too. If an AT101 is all a guy or gal can get their hands on, or it is literally the cheapest board they can get (including shipping etc) than who is to say "It's not worth it."?

Because then we get 3,500 posts of "this keyboard is **** because I did not find it in a bin".

Sometimes things just aren't worth the price they are being sold for. It seems to be becoming more and more common now that mechanical keyboards are in higher demand.

Again, not arguing that they are, in fact, worth the asking. What I am arguing is that the AT101 is not a board to be dismissed as "basically just generic old Dell keyboards from the 90's". They deserve somewhat more credit than that, if only to be another mech board to try out. The price that is worth to some is certainly higher than others, but I think we can all agree that they ARE better than a rubber dome (except maybe welly and his 80%-topre KT03601 ;))

Point taken, but the fact remains that $70 will buy you a far better keyboard. Back in the days when there were new ones around for $5-10, it was the keyboard to recommend, now it's a less tempting proposition.

That, and Alps don't age well. You'd really want to be buying a new or nearly new one to get a guarantee of getting one with decent typing feel.

Agreed. To be fair, part of my interest in this is the thrill of the hunt. Finding this **** cheap and local can be a far more gratifying experience than paying top dollar off ebay.

And for the sake of relevance to the topic (alternatives for the price),  if I had $70 bucks, I would probably spend it over at unicomp and get a spacesaver. or tack a bit more on to get THIS. Or bank it for a rainy day truely rare find on ebay.

How much an item is worth depends solely on what someone is willing to pay for it.
If either of those keyboards sell then, yes, to someone they are worth the price asked.
They may not be worth it to me or you but may be worth it to someone else.
I personally think that the model m mini's are way over priced but since there are people willing to pay the price asked for them then undoubtedly they must be worth that price.

Another personal opinion. Whats makes it better??? Maybe better for you, maybe better for most people on this forum, but not better for everyone. Certainly not better for me, I'll take the at-101w over a model m every day.
I'm not a fan of buckling spring & I am a fan of alps switches.

I'm not going to preach that the at-101w is a better keyboard than a model m but I will say that I prefer the at-101w or a alps switch board.

Focus FK2000 with cover

Well I paid $4.50 for mine at a thrift shop. It was definitely worth it to me. I don't like it enough to pay $69.00 for a new one though.
i have seen unix admins with john deere trucker hats, and even seen a man in a nascar shirt correct a passerby's klingon.
