Making my own (coiled) cables
« on: Sun, 31 January 2021, 04:58:21 »
Hello there,

I'm looking to make some custom cables to go with my Ergodox EZ (a double TRRS one and and Mini-USB to USB-A one), but I'm not exactly sure how I can ensure that everything has the correct size, diameter, and that it will work for coiling.

I was thinking to order the cable and sleeving on MDPC-X because I like the look and also it's European, but what would you recommend as cable size to have a look similar to the ones in the sleeving guide here https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=82202.0 ? I see they have 15, 17 or 23 AWG.

I have seen on the Pexon PCS FAQ that coiling doesn't work with just MDPC-X and that it requires a 550 paracord base (here https://pexonpcs.co.uk/pages/faq). Do you know why?
So I would need to do a double sleeving (one paracord 550 and one MDPC-X), and put the MDPC-X around the paracord one, so the MDPC-X would need to be a bit bigger in diameter, or be more extensible, so maybe a (non-XTC) Small sleeving would do the trick to go with the rest?
I assume the color of the Paracord doesn't matter if I put a MDPC-X on top of it?

I'd like to make sure I don't buy the wrong stuff and get some good looking coiled cables with my first buy since shipping is a bit expensive and I apparently cannot buy everything from a single place if I want coiling.

Thanks a lot!
