Picture request - Pine SKCM Black gutts
« on: Fri, 05 February 2021, 05:09:19 »
Hi there,
I asked the same on Deskthority, but I'm a bit more hopeful that more people will be able to help and contribute if I ask on multiple places.

I need some picture to make sense of the Alps timeline a bit more. The Deskthority wiki is also a bit weak regarding SKCM Blacks, especially the pine variety.
What pics do I need?
A picture of an early pine Black switch, specifically the tactile leaf, from multiple angles. I want to compare them with Salmon alps.
A late pine might come in handy as well. Who knows how many versions it has...
My theory based on the SKCM Ivories are: Pine blacks came after Salmons while retaining the same tactile leaf and possibly using different plastics for the sliders. This is the theory I want to either proove, or disproove.
The best would be similar comparisons to this (this pic was uploaded by me to the Deskthority wiki):

I got tangled in the Alps timeline and I want to untangle it...just a bit xD And as we know... Even a little bit helps.

Thank you very much in advance for your contributions guys! You'd help out a lot! Maybe we could even expand on the wiki just a bit by your commissions! I'll upload them if you're ok with it!

I have an ADB NeXT keyboard. I imagine that would fit the bill. I'll set an alarm or something to remind me to find that thing and rip one of the switches apart when I'm home. I also know a guy at a recycling facility sitting on a literal pile of Dell AT101s that might be helpful, if necessary.

I'm so jelaous... XD
Also, Please do take them to check them. At the worst you can flip them on eBay, or give them away in the community. Please don't let them go to waste. They deserve better.
I'm from hungary and I LITERALLY can't get hold of Any Dell AT102s or 101s for that matter.

It was a lucky find on Ebay. Even then it wasn't cheap vs going to a recycling facility and grabbing an old Dell board.

He wants to find them a home. He's a Model M fan and saves anything mechanical to make sure they're not destroyed (one reason I wish people wouldn't harvest switches from perfectly good boards either). His boss, who owns the place, just recently found an interest in keyboards when he discovered that he really likes Fujitsu Peerless switches.

Have you not seen any reasonable prices on AT101s online? They've been pretty inflated lately, but prices that aren't insane can still be found. I imagine shipping might kill the deal though.

Sorry I missread your last message: I understood you saved the Dells.
The problem is I can't find ANY mech dells for sale in the EU. Only in the UK, and for 50 or more Brittish pounds. And because of Brexit, I now have to pay +27%TAX to my government for importing fees. Thanks Great Britain!

Anyway...
I am a HUGE ISO fan. I have an IBM Blue alps clone on the way and my first thing to do is going to be strip the hole thing down, probably and put the switches into an AEK II if they sound any good. First, I'll only start by a few switches, and see if the sound becomes disgusting in the AEK II Chassis.
I can't stand ANSI for long sadly (due to hungarian layout in windows). However, thinking about it, I may end up leaving it be since afaik, it has N-Key rollover and such yummi things up it's sleeve.

Aaaaaaaaaaanyway, I'm looking forward do your photos!

Thank you. May I add some of theese to the Deskthority wiki? Do you find a layer of lubricant on the slider? It's a very thin (like a breath on a window) layer of grey-ish substance. It makes the slider look dull, not shiny.

Sure, go ahead. I know the wiki needs a lot more work. There was some fine dust on the exterior of the switch, so I couldn't say for sure offhand if the slider had dust or dry lubricant on it. I can rip one apart again tonight and try to see.

There is no dry lube on the switches. It's silicone based, and only on the slider, but it covers the entire thing. See if you can scratch it with a plastic pick, or wipe it with your finger.
