First non-trash keyboard
« on: Thu, 12 August 2010, 00:38:06 »
Hey guys,

Love the site.  I make the rounds on a few of the 'niche'-ish tech boards (headphonic, [h]ard, stackoverflow, Tom's, etc) and thought I may as well set up over here too.  You know it's a good site when a healthy portion of the threads you read have some reference to GAS - Gear Acqusition Syndrome :-)

So I've never really had a good keyboard  before, and recently got a co-op (internship for 6 months) that has me earning a bit of money.  I'm building a new PC, buying a second HP LP2475w (well, maybe...definitely an IPS though) and looking to get a new receiver and some bookshelf speakers in addition to my old reliable ATH-ES7 phones.  Needless to say you'll see me around here haha.

What the heck, might as well get a good keyboard right?
Here's my usage breakdown:
USB or PS/2 acceptable

most-least:
surfing, programming, games (RTS, fps), music, photoshop (lotsa shortcuts), other

Needs:
-Doesn't suck
-Under $125
-Not NUCLEAR BOMB loud.  I'm a college student, but have headphones on a lot and while my roommates will likely be tolerable, I don't want to be a jerk so I'd sacrifice a little to be a little quieter.  I understand that avoiding a bottom-out will make me quieter, so there's also that.  Volume is fine and I think I'll like audible clicks, but sonic booms are discouraged.

Would like:
-Windows key:  I use the guy a lot.  I can use AHK if necessary, though.
-Backlit:  would really like a backlit keyboard.  I could potentially mod this given I'm an EE student, but I'd like to avoid it and would pay to buy a backlit version of the same keyboard vs non backlit.  Prefer something non-obtrusive, as well.  No blood-red leds or flashing christmas tree stuff, basically.  Whiteish or soft white/blue would be perfect.
-Not a monster:  I don't want something that'll take up my entire desk.  I'm willing to sacrifice media keys and a numpad for this.  I've been more than fine with your average full keyboard in the past, however.  Physical thickness isn't a problem, but you guys are well aware of how dorm desks can be smaller in general.
-Looks.  I don't need a jet-black Razer keyboard with racing stripes and dancing LEDs, but I'd like something RELATIVELY modern.

Don't care about:
-Numpad
-Scroll lock (had to take a shot at it :-p)
-Media keys (can use autohotkey)

On all points:  if you can make a good argument, I will be more than happy to research and you'll definitely be able to make me reconsider.  I'd say that price is firm, but I also said that when I bought my first IPS monitor and pair of headphones.  A $300 budget became $550, and a $60 budget became $100+.  I understand that this is an investment and will have no problem justifying it to myself if you can justify it to me.  Given how much I use my computer (like many of you) there's no reason not to make it as nice as possible.

Cheers!

welcome, runner.  $125 budget should be no problem. Sounds like real filter here is the backlit requirement.  That should narrow the choices down rapidly.  I dont know any but possibly Deck or one of the new Adessos are backlit?

btw, you do want a mechanical board right? If you dont mind a quality dome board, probably more backlit options open up.

yeah, I think you will find backlit is the killer here. Maybe going in the opposite direction and getting an otaku so you have to train yourself to touchtype will be easier.

as far as noise goes, cherry browns would be a good choice.

My mistake regarding the backlight: I definitely don't need it to see the keys :-p been a TTer for a long time.   I guess I just like the idea and was impressed with the appearance of the effect on something like the Macbook Pro. I don't have one (or want one!) but the backlight was nice.

I'll have a desk light on if I'm working most of the time, btw.

That Otaku board looks nice and I like the ninja factor of blank keys :-p. I'm thinking more and more about the deck boards even though they're a bit more than I'd like to spend. Are there any boards of better feel/quality/volume than the Decks to justify losing the backlight?

As far as I know, Decks are among the best made new keyboards around now.

Looks like I've come down to Filco Tactile Touch (what switch do you think?) VS the Deck 104 Ice Tactile.

Any thoughts/opinions based on my preferences?

Decks are cool. You'd probably be fine with either. Unless you had to return the filco (you cant).

I like backlit boards, i'm surprised we dont see that as a more standardized feature.

Browns versus Clears . . I'm with the you should be happy with either, even with the clears require more force.

Doesn't surprise me the least that backlit hasn't been more of a feature, even if I'm always yearning for one.

Gamers are willing to thump on wooden blocks, while typing professionals got the itch for Buckling Springs and Blues.  Where the twain(or 'tween) met has been a smaller group.  It took the recent Logitech Illuminated to get backlit really out into the mainstream.

Also, even though I compute in the dark, it is supposedly bad for you.

As the iOne and maybe even Razer indicate, though more people are bringing backlit and mechanical together.

Deck still has the only backlit tenkeyless (along with their TG3 siblings).

Regular LEDs are cheap; not these ones.  Looks like I'm down to a Deck board; either the tactile Ice or tactile Frost, both full layouts.  Frost is the white-ish, while Ice is the blue.  It looks like Frost is somewhat of a very light blue/purpley tinted, which I think is good.

I'm thinking the Frost; I feel like blue keys would get annoying after a while?  I'd really like it if I could get their 'gold' one with orange-ish keys, but can't find it anywhere.

Thoughts on the coloration?

My Deck is the green "toxic" and its great for gaming. Looks good too.
Its not tactile however and not usually preferred for typing alot.
I have 3 PC's so its no problem for me.

There's decent amounts of information available for the Decks and the Xarmor U9BL.  Arghhhh I'm stuck and can't make a decision!

Deck Frost Legend
Deck Ice Legend
Xarmor U9BL

any advice as far as comparing their feels and what you think of the backlighting?  I'm a college student, so account for that and that I'll get the education discount :-)

I say... Give up the backlighting. Get a Filco with Cherry browns. They don't make nearly as much noise as the blues or whites or buckling springs, but they still have a tactile click feel as you press them down (although it is subtle, it's definitely there).

This also has the added benefit of bringing you back under your original budget.

If the only thing you really care about is the backlight, then go with the Deck Frost, but it's going to be louder than the browns, and it's going to set you back way more than the Filco.

As it is, the Deck and the U9BL both only satisfy two of your listed goals - they're mechanical, and they're backlit, but they're fairly loud, and they're not cheap. I guess it depends on what your priorities really are.

I know that, but this is probably the weirdest spam I've seen in a while.

Still not as good as that one that posted some huge popular meme with a lot of jokes, and every "." was a link to a fake viagra site. That was actually pretty clever.

There've been a couple of interesting bots around recently. I just today got a subscription email from some forum I posted on like two years ago, where a bot made liberal use of a thesaurus.

Me:
Quote
Obviously Intel doesn't use higher clock speeds for reason of heat, but if my CPU is stable at stock speeds on less than 1.00V then why do they ship it with a VCC as high as 1.215V? That would even increase heat, right?

Bot 1:
Quote
Plainly Intel doesn't use higher time speeds for ground of energy, but if my CPU is unchanging at gillyflower speeds on fewer than 1.00V then why do they ship it with a VCC as altitudinous as 1.215V? That would straight increment change, starboard?

Bot 2:
Quote
Manifestly Intel doesn't use higher clock speeds for think of emotionality, but if my CPU is firm at security speeds on inferior than 1.00V then why do they ship it with a VCC as postgraduate as 1.215V? That would symmetrical growth emotionalism, justice?

The last one in particular delves deeply into the realm of "what the ****?". symmetrical growth emotionalism, justice?

Aw, it's only "wtf" because you don't gillyflower your CPU in an altidudinous manner.  1.215V is plenty symmetrical growth for that justice.

Just got my response back from Xarmor's sales team:  I qualify for the 25% discount and get a free 2400dpi optical mouse.  Seeing as how I need a mouse as badly as I need a keyboard...this has me thinking.  This would be $127.50.

As far as the blues vs blacks/browns go, any thoughts?  I'm not a hardcore gamer btw but I do play often.  I don't think it's going to bug me if I have to press a little harder; at least I won't blame the keyboard, I mean.
