Hello from Estonia 👋
« on: Sat, 27 February 2021, 15:11:08 »
Been watching from the outside, here's my keyboard progression:

- Apple magic keyboard (lol)
- Trust GXT cada Outemu Red
- Keychron K1 v4 (Gateron brown)
- GK64 (Gateron Blue/Milky Yellow)
- KBDFans 5degree Gateron Milky Yellow
- KBDFans Tofu 65 Gateron Ink Red

currently joined group buys:

- GMK Alpine
- GMK Stealth
- Saka 65 e-white

my story is: i've been looking for a keyboard for work, went through reviews on youtube until
i came across taehatypes and the rest is history... hope to learn more about the ins-and-outs
of the community as well as have some luck and patience when joining group buys :D

Hi pongstr. Welcome to Geekhack.

The "magic" keyboard set your standards low. They could only go up from there, right?

How did you like the Outemu switches? Those are the only ones in the list that I have tried that stand out to me as maybe being worse than MX, not that MX reds are particularly bad. Wouldn't mind some Gateron yellows some day for gaming if I stop being lazy.

What switches have you tried? Have you gotten a tester yet? Tried any vintage switches?

In retrospect, this gave me bad impression of Linear Switches as it felt like un-natural, typing felt like any
other main stream mechanical keyboard. Thinking about it now, based on my experience so far (which is not a lot),
I think I won't be trying Outemu for a while as I prefer to be strategic allocating budget, I'm still learning about what
I want/prefer in a switch, looking to acquire some NK Creams (only because they've been poplular?, no basis of reference)
for the Saka68 build i'm patiently waiting to build.

I've only had Gateron Milky Yellow+Red Ink, as noob it's an affordable baseline for me to learn or
find what I'm looking for in a switch. I will definitely try vintage switches someday.

I wouldn't write off Outemu entirely. If you do end up liking clickies at all, I find Outemu blues to be almost indistinguishable from Gateron blues. Both are some of the better clicky MX clones. It just seems to me that Outemu's tactiles and linears are pretty scratchy.

I have not tried creams myself, as I'm mostly a clicky guy. For linears, you may want to take a peek at optical switches as well. Various OEMs are selling affordable boards with them now. The only problem is that while they may be compatible with MX caps, they can't be replaced with MX or clone switches. Due to the fact that they have no physical contacts that need to rub against other components of the switch during travel, they're supposed to be very smooth right out of the gate.

I have never tried the milky switches myself. I do like Gateron yellows. Seem better than MX red in every way, especially in that the weighting is just a bit stiffer. I accidentally actuate MX reds by just resting my fingers on them, which is horrible for gaming.

Good luck on your switch journey. Plenty of people with greater interest/knowledge on modern linears and tactiles than myself can help you if you have any specific questions for experts in the Keyboards section.
